won't idle

My 2000 Explorer XLS won't idle. It will run only if I keep my foot on the gas. Even after it has been run for a 15 minute ride, it will not idle. Last winter it was an occasional problem that cleared up when warmed up. Now it is constant. Seems to use more gas in these last weeks before refusing to idle. Any ideas?

Also-it isn't uncommon for vacuum leaks to develop in the intake manifold gaskets.
The leaks kind of "seal up" a bit when the engine warms up

I had that same problem with my old Toyota PUP.
it was the IAC valve as well, or at least thats what my mechanic at the time told me.

Thank you all for your help. My mechanic also thinks it is what you describe, the IAC valve. As I need the car in two days time I am going to take it to the dealer for what I hope is a quick repair. I hope that they find the issue without a lot of time and money spent...again, Thanks!
