I just bought a 1995 Explorer 2WD, 4DR Eddie Bauer, for my son. It hadn't been driven in 5 years. New fuel pump and battery and it was running. I replaced all the fluids etc. and when replacing the Tranny fluid and filter I put new gaskets on the Valve Body because it was had some slippage. I am still having Tranny issues. When in 1 or 2 it works fine, however in Drive it will not shift up, even if I let up off the gas and allow the rpms to drop. Then if I rev the engine while still in drive it seems as if it's just slipping or not engaging. I don't know much about transmissions, can anyone help me with what the problem is, or might be? Thanks

Okay, well I got a new Valve Body, with the bonded gaskets and all the updates to resolves the issues related to these cars, put in in and I still have the same issue. I then replaced the Neutral Sensor Switch and Walla, it shifted like a dream. So smooth you barely noticed it shifting at all. My wife drove it for a day and now it's experiencing 2nd and 3rd hard shifts and revving going into 4th so that you need to let off the gas peddle to get it to go in. ARRGGGG.... Does anyone have an idea of what it could be now? Thanks, Bill

Try replacing the vehicle speed sensor (vss) this will cause similar symptoms

Thanks, I will look into it and let you know if it works. I'm sure it must be a sensor of some kind because if i disconnect the battery cable to clear the codes the transmission works great again, for awhile anyway.
