Worklog: 3 beats 6 (pics) NEW PICS 01/27!

OK,
I figured I would chronicle this system since it's going to be the biggest undertaking I've personally ever done. I've had at least 4 giant systems done by local shops, and I was never happy. I then went and did my own system of 6 JL 12W-3's and was proud of my work, but I thought it left something to be desired. In comes my friend Sean Fleming, who has set records in his division (street 1-2) for the past couple of years. He told me he could make 3 subs kill my 6 12's. I said no way, he said "yes way" and proceeded to come over one morning and GUT my entire system that took me 6 months to build. Guess I had no choice but to doa new system then huh?

Plan of attack:

Vehicle: My trusty 1997 Ford Explorer XLT

Already have: Clarion VRX-925DV 7" Touchscreen up front.
2 sets of Adire Koda 6.5's
2 sets VIFA 25mm Silk Dome Tweeters
2 MTX 502 amps (1 for mids, 1 for highs)
Clarion 6 channel X-over with remote Bass knob
220 Amp Powermaster Alternator
Yellow Top up front
2 SVR 12-100 Batteries (HUGE) in the back.
Fatmatted entire roof with 2 layers and doors with 3 layers.

What I had to buy:
3 Resonant Engineering x.. 15's
3 MTX 1501D's
Air Suspension
A ton of terminals
3 sheets MDF
5 yards of Fleece
An ungodly amount of fiberglass

Here come the pics:
My truck, waiting to get beat down

We need good ground, time to get down to the frame. Ought gauge for sure Excuse the rust; she's my grocery getter.

12 cubes tuned to 32 Hz needs 200 sq. inches of port.. DOH!
Just enough room

Building Up the sidewalls. We will be fiberglassing a single piece including the sub rings so there will be no seams. Thinking about metallic black now.

Round 2

3 1501d's on a motorized amp rack in the rear. One amp will have it's guts showing, with some blue lights for effect.

The sub rings: The center sub will face Cone UP to the roof.
The outer rings will be motors up. I've never gotten to do an install with the motors showing so I forced Sean to give up the idea of doing a wall in my truck (my SPL master). It still has to be functional fool!

3 of these babies will be dropping in. I'm really excited to see what all the hub-bub about XBL-2 motors is. Here is one on my new x.. 15's next to my old JL- 12. Pretty crazy comparison

I'll be sure to keep you all posted. We will start the glassing process on Saturday. My goal is to have it ready by March 5th. We got some serious work to do. I'll be doing 4 Adire Koda's in the front door since that's my stage The rear passengers will have to suffer with some MB Quart's I've had for a couple of years. I feel like a 16year old kid getting their 1st system again. I'm FINALLY going to get what I want. I just hope it gets loud and sounds clean.

ANY and ALL suggestions as to what I can do to improve the system would be appreciated. I want this one to last.

Thanks gang!

holy crap thats awesome and is gonna be loud!

thats gunna be killer..make sure to take lots of pics while ur building it =)

Its looking good so far. Keep the pics coming in for updates. What tools are you using to create all this?

Well my boy Jeff has a huge shop. His dad is a Pro Stock racer so we have access to almost anything we could possibly need.

MDF was all done with Circular Saw, Jig Saw, and most importantly, the Table saw. A T-Square is a MUST! Cordless Drills and Wood Glue, and a Router to help so you can roll the edges of the MDF and also route the port edges to prevent port noise.

Drill press will come in handy and the lathe will come in real handy for the custom grills made of polished aluminum.

do u have any pics of ur old setup?

Edit: i also have a question about the port...wont the tail gate close on the port? or be what an inch from the ports?

damm you got a portable night club there

The port actually has a good 4 inches from the rear hatch. It will be fine. I'm going to have to concrete my tailgate, but it will be fine :D

dude that is sweet =) i guess that answeres someones question about bass cancelation lol

Well my friends who compete in World Finals tell me my 6 12's setup had cancellation because 2 of those subs faced each other. I had always assumed my design would create a pressure point in the middle and shoot the air upwards at the roof. I hit 152.8 with the 6 12's so I was happy with that, being my first system that I built, and that the box was sealed too :p . These 3 x.. 15's with over 1000 watts to each, and ported, should break that easily according to them. I can't wait to find out.

ummm...sick...im gonna go lay down for a while now.....

very cool man- can't wait to see the next roind of pics

I own 1 15xxx. Three is absolutely sick  I should do a "pretty" install one day :)

Ooooh Vteg, just the person I wanted to talk to then.
I have had JL in my rides since 1993. I have NEVER had a different sub. I took a risk and went with my friend's recommendation. So the x..'s get pretty loud? I'm also concerned with SQ though. It's a frickin' 15, can they hit tight bass drum kicks?

Thanks.

RE makes good subs and the SQ should be good too. I would of rather seen you go with 3 15A's from eD but that because I have two eD subs...:D

4 6.5 Kodas should set the front stage up nicely but how are you going to have them set? One playing midbass the other midrange?

The MTX amps (thanks to rf) are good to.

The Koda's will be both be playing the same frequency ranges I believe, and the VIFAS will obviously provide the highs. We will most likely (due to space) leave one set of Koda's in the high door, and one set in custom kick panels. I just wanted a little more midbass up front. The Kodas smoke anything I've ever had (Quart and Focal) in that department. The only thing better is what my friend is getting from RE next month:a pair of 6.5" x.. Midbass/Subs. Once I hear those, I'll probably switch.:D
