I just installed a Flowmaster 70 in my 02 V8 Explorer. It is a little to loud in the cab. I have seen on this site that people have wrapped exhaust/Header pipes ( Spindle Cone for one). Given a good solid wrap, will this reduce some sound in the cab? I still want the "Rumble" from the Tail Pipe. Also, what type of material is used to Wrap the pipes?

I would assume that you could use any good header wrap.

Let me know if this gives you any HP gains

Will not deaden sound, you wrap pipe to: protect items you want to keep heat from (in my case my tranny pan and starter moter.
To lower underhood temps if you have headers.
Wrapped pipe also has some perf benis, wrapped pipe keeps more heat in the inside of the pipe, hotter gas moves faster, creates a scavanging effect, it in essense sucks exhaust gas

Please move this to the 2002-2005 MOdified section

Thanks... Also I have been reading on this site regarding Flowmasters, I notices that the "70" is quieter than the "40" after checking my muffler I found 3 alarming facts:

1) The muffler is a "40" not a "70"
2) The Input pipe goes INSIDE the muffler on a bend, Won't this restrict flow.
3) The Output of the muffler is going Outside ( Over) the tail pipe. Again wont this restrict flow.

I have notices my MPG has gone down since the install. Will be retuning to the show...

Spindlecone,
corret me if im wrong, doesent wrapping your headers void the waranty and weakens the pipes causing problem down the road.
Anyways, it looks really good.

Where can I get some header wrap like that? I hate the fact that my oil filter, tranny pan and starter motor are that darn close to my pipes.

Get the two inch as it needs to be heavily overwrapped by half, you can use SS wire but the SS locking ties work best.
You also need alot, my Y-pipe took about 65 ft
Best place to buy it is ebay IMO
Riverst your 100% correct, wrapping headers is not recomended.
Y-pipes, other underbody componants have alot of airflow over them, they don't get near as hot as headers

Thanks for the tips, I seen advance had 2" by 100ft i believe

Alot of people in the ricer world wrap thier header to lower the underhood temp because of a turbo or some other device of increase power. My question to you knowing that the companies that make the headers dont suggest we do it- Does the benifet out wiegh the potential damage to the pipes. if the benifit does, then i will wrap mine also. I just want to make sure I dont cause more damage than good.

Don't know about the benis of wrapping headers, I would not do it.

It will usually only hurt cheap headers/exhaust. If you got good headers i.e Hookers, any good stainless header it will not hurt a thing. Guys have wrapped headers for years with no issues. The only downfall of it is it can trap moisture between the pipe and the wrap and cause much faster deterioation of the pipes. This is something to watch on a 4WD vehicle especially on the under side.
