We just bought a 98 xlt...the turn signals stopped working. The hazards work fine. The bulbs aren't burned out. THe fuse is fine. If i turn on the turn signal switch nothing happens at all. NOW, if I wiggle the turn signal switch...i can get a chatter sometimes out of the turn signal/hazard relay. This leads me to believe it's the turn signal switch that is the problem.

Maybe there's a TSB on this that I don't know about?

I gotta believe Somebody else has had this problem and can give me and quick solution to this problem.

THANK YOU!

actually, it sounds like a loose connector or ground wire.... check the connections on the switch

It sounds like your flasher bulb is burned out. The same thing happened to me in my '91 Eddie Bauer. You can trouble shoot this by taking out your flasher bulb from your hazards and swapping it with your turn signal flasher. Voilla!! It should work. Just go to your local parts store and spend $1-2 dollars on a new one. The Flasher bulbs should both be on the fuse box. The Hazard flasher is behind the fuse box, sometimes hard to see. Let me know if this helps

From reading the owner's manual..
The hazards and turn signal bulbs are the same on the 98. There is only a fuse that says Harzards. No turn signal labeled fuse according to the manual. Looking at the bulbs when hazards are on..none are burned out.
The manual says..if one side doesn't flash but the other does..you have a bulb out..If neither flash..you have a relay or turn signal switch problem. The hazard relay and turn signal relay are the same also.
It leads me to believe the turn signal switch is the problem cuz when I turn the switch and wiggle it..I get some chatter on the relay. Or maybe it's a loose wire like posted. I'll be checking it all out tomorrow.

Oh,..I checked one of the rear lights and there is only One bulb for turning and hazards so i figured the same all around

IF Youuu said LOose Connection at the Switch...
You are RIGHT!
Ding ding ding...

THat was exactly the case. The wires go into a plastic connector..THe connector has plastic locking things that hold the wire inside. 2 plastic locking things were Broken. Result...tilt the steering a couple times and wire comes out.

Part is 4 bux and problem is solved.

whew!

Those turn signal switches are known for problems. mine was bad and only the high beam headlights would work and the turn signal buzzer would not click sometimes. Found out the wires inside has chafed and "fused together" and were shorting out. go get it fixed ASAP!!!!
