Hey...I just wanted to get an idea of what kind of gas mileage other exploders are getting. I did a search and didn't find a thread like this

List year, model, engine, tranny, and mileage.

Me = 98 XLT, 4.0 SOHC, 4wd, 140+k miles

city...12 MPG.

highway...20MPG if i'm lucky

err, about the same. A little better in city, a little worse on highway.

Me = 01 XLT, 4.0 SOHC, 4wd, just turned 141,000 on the way home from work

city 14/15 hwy 18/19

2001 Ford Explorer Sport, 4.0 SOHC 2WD , 89k miles, 20/21 City 27/29 Highway. Stock Unmodded.

Plan on doing mods soon though.

We have a 95 Limited

City = 14/15
Highway ~20ish depending on if its interstate driving or not...

I have an 01 Sport Trac 4x4, with catback and AEM intake. It gets an average of about 18 mpg of mixed city/highway driving. My last 9 tanks have been from 16.3 to 19.2 mpg. The low numbers are when I do more city driving and the high numbers have more highway miles. I don't do all highway or all city driving, so I don't know what those numbers are.

30 is not a typical realistic MPG amount.. With the right gearing maybe a low ratio of 3.27 or 3.55 or even 3.07 you should be able to get really great gas mileage since the RPMs at highway speeds will be around or below 2800 RPMs. Remember things like not being heavy on the skinny pedal will help. Progressing slowly from a stop instead of hammering the pedal will help alot. So will keeping your tires properly inflated and making sure your air/fuel system is clean. Simple things like a clean MAF, air filter, clean fuel filter will assist you. Don't forget about spark plugs, with your vehicle having over 140K, find out if the plugs were ever replaced. If they weren't I'd suggest a set of Motorcraft Double Platinums.

I've looked through the first couple pages...Its like reading a damn book. I'll have to sit down one day after finals are over and read it all.

I still can't believe that you got over 30 MPG. My old Mazda protege didn't even get that lol

Al is very thorough with his posts, and is very informative. He does plenty of research for everything he does. It's a good read.
