Im new to the forum, wondering if anyone has any suggestions or advice. Goal is to cam it, head milling, porting and polishing, and a single 2.5inch exhaust with a good 87 octane tune. Motor has 153k on it. All stock car. Parts list so far: Sealed Power ZH2244 roller lifters, $40 a piece Comp 49-422-8 camshaft, $300 As you can tell I need some advice on rods, valve springs, rocker arms, and gaskets, or anything else thanks
I just wanted to show off my DIY remote build. The truck is an AWD 2000 5.0 Explorer. - I like to think of it as an AWD SUV Mustang:) This truck actually was lifted with tube bumpers, safari rack, and 32" ATs on 20" wheels just a few months ago- it has undergone a big transformation here lately. It is now lowered slightly in the front with the rear at stock height(with sagging springs). I kept the same wheels but put smaller tires on them and added 2" spacers. Now onto the turbo... The Turbo is a T04E 57trim which turned out to be perfect for remote mounting. It is a little small if one wanted 10psi+, but I planned on 6psi max and fast spool. I am using the stock exhaust with muffler delete to the turbo, then a 3" mandrel bent...
I want a mid-size 4 door SUV to drive when my 2000 Sport is being modified. I was planning to purchase a 2000 4 door Explorer with the SOHC V6 to take advantage of what I've learned, spare parts and my SCT PCM programming software package. However, I realized that at my age my next project vehicle will probably be my last. I've always been partial to DOHC engines since I purchased a 1958 Jaguar XK-150 in 1965. A recent thread: '02 limited 4.0 to 4.6 dohc swap has captured my interest. I didn't know that the Aviator came with a DOHC V8 engine and was based on the 3rd generation Explorer. Since I don't like the looks of the Aviator front or the 500 lb weight disadvantage I've become very interested in swapping an Aviator engine into an...
Anyone have any experience on supercharging the 5.0L? After all the intake and exhaust work I have done and and tuned by Henson Performance (Thanks James) my little motor still strains to push 2 plus tons down the road. I guess I should clarify that once I'm up to speed it perfoms great. The engine is strong and the truck will go faster then I care to(again thanks to James at Henson Performance for removing the speed limiter). I'm just looking for more power off the line(Damn Civics) and supercharging seems to me to be the best option. I don't want to tear into the engine (thats for another day). So I thought I would ask you all about doing this. I have been researching and can pick up an Eaton M90(rebuilt) for a decent price but the...
Do we have a Kill list??.. If not.. Post em.. I know some of you guys have been to tracks... what have you guys beaten and been beaten by... Also list what you have done to your truck incase its not in your sig. In the cases of expo5.0 and especially Troll..don't bother listing what you got under your hoods... we all know  lol Troll
I flipped the driver side manifold so i can run a pipe under the bellhousing to Y with the outlet of the drivers side manifold there is where the turbo will be placed. Plan is low boost no more than 5 psi on a draw thru design with the recurculating bypass. i had built a temp down pipe to get the truck around during the build runs good no leak from the manifold and today i pulled a garret T3 out of the wrecking yard for a few bucks I have some digital photos for better quality ill download those when i get a chance
As things are getting closer and closer thought I would update. Started late last year, reading posts and asking questions. I decided to go ahead to drop in a built 347 into my 1996 explorer which has over 300,000km (almost 190,000 miles) on it. The truck still runs great BTW, and has been in the family since new and its been in my hands since last Oct. First impulse was a cheap 1996 complete 1996 5.0L Explorer motor on fleabay. Shipped it to the engine builder to use as a donor. It is a 347 built by Fordstrokers with a custom cam from Camshaft Innovations. - Scat rotating assembly - Mahle pistons -Trick flow fast as cast 190cc heads - comp gold rockers - trick flow Track Heat intake. - Torque Monster Headers built with...
Does anybody ever done such a thing? I'm wondering if the stock ECM will handle like 4 o 5 psi of boost without any mods? I live at the Andes mountains, at 6.600 feet of altitude and the atmospheric pressure here is around 9 psi, so I figure if I add 4 or 5 psi of turbo boost the explorer migh perform like if it was at sea level..?? what if I go down to sea level..?? the 4.0 SOHC uses a MAF sensor, so the increase of airflow under boost will make the ECM dump more fuel... or not..?? up to a certain point I'm sure, since definitely the air/fuel mixture is correct at this altitude as well as down at the coastline, in other words, can the ECM be fooled to make it think it's working at sea level..?? thanks.
Well I got tired of the 4.0 ohv not having any power on the highway climbing the hills on the 62 and having no low end in 4x4 high offroad, especially now that I have a pickup with a 5.7 v8 in it.. I've been lurking for some time since I've been kinda busy with work but, I got my hands on a Turbonetics T3 T4 hybrid so it's project time. It has the .48ar T3 turbine and a f1-57 trim T4 compressor. I expect this thing will spool FAST but I am not making any claims to being too familiar with forced induction..worst case scenario is there's a problem I can get a higher trim turbine. I plan on having it live just behind and to the right of the alternator after doing test fitting. Its snug but should work nice to draw through my snorkel set...
This is going to be a big stumbling block for a few people The stock balance for a 5.0 explorer engine is 50z in A stroker engine will require a 28 oz in balance-- so a flexplate and harmonic balancer switch is needed. The flexplates are out there, but the explorer Harmonic balancer-pulley-dis trigger is all one unique unit for explorers-- When I purchased my stroker kit from Coast High-they found me one I assure you. However, even with my receipt ( no part number) they have no idea what I am referring to-- My thoughts--can material be removed from the stock balancer ( by machine shop of course) to work with the new balance weight? Also-for thought--the 96-98 mustang pulley looks awful close--- I might add, my...
Thoughts guys? I'm dropping on new heads anyway. I think if I pulled my rediator, id be able to get the cam out? I am after mileage more than anything. I think that means very little overlap on the lobes but lots of lift. Wouldn't that mean I'd have to go with dual springs on the heads and custom push rods? I'm also concerned about installing the cam properly. Getting the cam one tooth out on the timing chain would be a bad thing. There is also something about the cam sensor? Ugh. Having never done this, I'm concerned. Am I correct on my assumptions? From reading these ohv threads, I know some of you have a very real understanding of this.
My 98 4.0 SOHC is really fast. Are they supposed to be fast? I have whipped up on a lot of cars and trucks trying to race me. Seems like the thing has endless gears compaired to my 4.0 95 EB and my 01 Expedition 5.4. I hit the gas and it starts going into passing gear, but if I hit it again it goes into a higher passing gear and just kicks azz is this normal or did someone put a tune on this thing? I know it is all set up for towing and the towing rack in the back is huge and meant for hauling something big and the it even had what looks like after market oil and trans coolers. Anyone have any ideas? I got this truck used.
so i bet one of my buddys the other day that i could get my 98 xlt 4.0 sohc to put out 300 hp without many crazy mods. im kinda doubting myself considering its probably lost some ponies over the years but i thought it be interesting to see if it can be done without a turbo or supercharger. im gunna do some of the basics, intake, exhaust, throttle body, and all the other little things. i already have flowmaster super 44's and a kkm intake but im thinking about swapping them out for a k&n and other mufflers, im wondering what muffler and cats would be best. im also changing my gears to 4:10s but im not sure if that actually adds hp. any other ideas im thinking about putting some jba headers on but ive heard they dont do much for the 4.0s.
hello all! well, turdle's mounty has come to maryland. i had been tossing around the idea of a really well built suv that didn't cost a fortune. i have a 97 mounty to tow my racecar and it has been a trusty companion for the last 4 years, but the drivetrain, although very reliable, hasn't been very inspiring. so, i had been looking around for options. i settled on the thought of a 347, but the cost was out of my range...until i read about turdle's mounty up for sale. done deal! now i need to get going on it. work has been crazy for the past month, so i havent been able to get very far and august isn't looking much better, but i am going to try to squeeze in some time. i thought about fixing up the new mounty and just selling mine...
