Offroad Projects

Big projects... Lifts, Swaps, etc... IMPORTANT As the subject use your name, or the name of your truck, and the name of the project. Such as Superlift 5.5" installation, Dana 44 conversion, etc.

So today will be the official last day the explorer will be on the road. It's rusting in several spots and now it's just getting to be a pain to work on. So with that being said it's time to lift it and get some mud diggers on it :D It's got the v8 with close to 208k on it, still runs strong. What should i do to go mudding? I'm going to lift it but i feel like i should stay away from the body lift. So that being said i plan on doing add a leaf and possibly the torsion twist. Going to build a custom intake for it with some PVC running up the pillars, probably going to go ahead and replace u-joints. CV Axles, coils, brakes, rotors and control arms on both sides have all been replaced within the last year. I'm not going for anything...
Hey forum! After having a hub bearing go out to me on the way to work, i figured its time for the ifs to go. I went on Craigslist and couldnt find anything but housings and half complete d44s. I finally found a set of complete axles from a 77 f150. I got the full width hp d44, for 9 inch, all suspension components, 4 speed trans, and a np205 transfer case all for $500! Im about to be heading to college in 2 months so i plan for this build to be quick and have a limited budget. I plan on running 37 inch military tires on 16.5 rims which is what im running on my other sas 1st gen. Parts needed: Axle: moved forward ~2-3" Shocks: monroe 13" travel shocks $45/shock Set of 7 degree bushings- $55 SS Extended brake lines- $80 12"...
Hey guys, So I started a SAS thread almost 2 years ago. Lots have changed since then. But I am finally ready to start my SAS! Originally i wanted to go with a custom 3 link set up but after reading Stic-O's tread and realizing that he has the same axle as me and was going through the same issue as me with the cast on wedges. so even though i really want a 3 link im going to go with the radius arms. think it will be the easiest to do and fairly cheap too. Current Truck Spec: 2000 Mercury Mountaineer AWD V8 174k miles. Current idea Dana 44 front on custom wristed arms with coils http://www.broncoii4x4.com/wristed-arm/wristed-arm.php Stock 8.8 SOA regeared with wheel adapters 37" tires on beadlock rims This will be my...
Decided to put a 3" body lift first and a soa on the rear. I dont want to mess with torsion twists thought. Gonna put some warrior shackles on the rear as well. Now for the front I was thinking of adding leafs to grab a little height. I would like to do a sas on the front but I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to trucks so if someone could be so great as to tell me what's not gonna work or how to make it work and the price on the sas I'd be very grateful! Also wanna sit it on 33's
Im thinking about buying a 2nd gen Explorer and dont like the auto 4x4. How could I give it the same 4x4 operations as a ranger. Like 2high instead of constant on and off 4x4. Ill be using it alot on the road and was wondering how much of a difference in handling would the solid axle make? If I go that route I want to keep build as clean as possible! What I mean by that is I want to appear as if ford built it that way. Any advise is appreciated! I basically want a bad ass explorer thatll go from regular highway driving to weekend toy. :us:
Been thinking lately about cutting a big hole it the roof and flush mounting a sheet of plexiglass in the roof. Large enough to cover the passenger area. This would have a steel frame it would sit in and would not open. Just thought it could be kinda cool to do to go with the truck. The truck does have a roll cage so I don't the structure will mater to much. Safety is a concern of course. Thoughts?
I'm looking to do a SAS on a 2nd gen explorer or sport trac (I have both to choose from at the moment). I already have a D50 from a 02 Superduty is complete in great shape minus some locking hubs. I have always figured I would use a cut down or narrow d44 but I already have this. I would match it in the rear with a 10.5. The plan is for 37-38" tires on some super offseted wheels so they don't stick way out there. It would be on leafs and i would try to keep ABS also. My use would be mostly mud and some street driving so it has to be street legal. Basically I'm looking for someone to say hey' I wouldn't use it because of so and so. I know all about the axle and it's strengths, but am very unsure of trying to use it under an explorer.
Hey all, I am in a quandry. I had a 91 explorer gave to me and i want to build a trail rig out of it. It has been sitting for ten years so it needs some (lot) of work. It has the 4.0 with a4ld trans and push button t-case. It ran fine when parked but do you think it would be worth getting running again. If I'm going to have to overhaul everything to make it reliable then I will go another route. That route is I also have a 77 f150 4x4 frame with a 390, c6 and 205 t-case. I'm thinking SAS no matter what. I even thought about dropping the ex on the f150 frame (shortened). I have a family of 4 so building a standard cab truck is out. I can fab and build no problem I just dont want to waste any time fixing exploder drivetrain...
