Welcome, and thanks for the addition. I'm going to be swapping in a 99-04 wiring set into my 91 Lincoln, using the 97 Explorer PCM. The VSS should be workable in those early 96/97 computers, but there's still a lot to figure out.

Hey Nick, do you think there would still be enough range of motion in the console hole to shift with a 2" body lift?

I have plenty of room and I used a 89 model transmission, with 2" body lift.

A 89 trans, 2" body, and a console? Awesome. I have a OBS trans as well and assumed I'd need a 97-98 top cover to make it work, so that saves me $100. My ex doesn't have a full console now but I wanted to add it if I can still shift.

That looks great. Did you bend the shifter at all?

Sorry for cluttering up your thread Nick but this seems like the best place to gather this info.

Yeah I heated it up and bent it a bit but afterwards I wish I hadn't. It would have worked fine the way it was.

To add to the shifter conversation, here are different M5R2 shifters through the years.

Far left is from a 98 F150. The cross bolt is 90 degrees from OBS shifters. The middle is from a 9th gen F150. The far right is from I think an 8th generation F150. It has significantly more rearward bend.

I just used the one that came with the transmission.

My engine is in and I went to put the trans in and the shifter is so far forward it doesn't even make it through the hole. I'm not sure how you made it work 96ex5.0.

I found a high mileage 97-98 trans for $400 and a low mileage one for $450 so I'll probably get one of those, probably the low miles one.

Odd I know mine came from an 89 f150, I had to cut my hole I didn't use a pre cut plate that may be the difference.

It didn't even fall inside the removable panel. I would have to hack into the actual body.

I picked up a 97-98 trans and it fits just like shown by others here - perfectly. As a perk my F150 front driveshaft should fit now, as well as my 4406 shift linkage without modification. They really took it to me though, that $428 transmission was $650 out the door after tax and core.

      Allow me to share a tip I learned a while ago;
For a core charge like that from yards, usually there is some kind of warranty for the item. Tell them you don't need the warranty, and ask them to waive the core charge. That works sometimes.

I got mine free in the long run, bot the entire truck for $500 used it in a tough truck contest then sold everything but the case and trans and made money. Only cost I have in it is I had it rebuilt and best parts possible used $1600 latter i installed.

I never thought of that. Too late now I suppose.

I'm almost finished with my cross member. I had to take out 1" of height. I thought I saw something in this thread about another option to avoid modifying the cross member but I'm not seeing it now.

This is pretty exciting to me so I have to share it, and this is pretty much the premier M5R2/4406 thread.

I got the 4406 bolted up after switching to the 98 M5R2 and was thinking about driveshaft options. I think it was in this thread I read that a expedition shaft would fit 4 doors, but hadn't found anything about STs. Anticipating a custom driveshaft, I pick the first slip yoke driveshaft off the pile I've collected over the years, planning to have a driveline shop graft it to the stock ST driveshaft. I slipped it in the 4406 to verify the splines were right, and what do you know, it is the perfect length and has the right size U joints. I only have to swap my flange onto it.

I'm not positive, but I think it came out of a 90 F150 supercab short bed 5.8 auto.

I just want to say thanks and good work. I've always kicked this around but with this there is no reason not to.
