Wanted 2001 Explorer Motor 4.0 SOHC 8th digit in Vin#E

FYI - The Vin-E is a SOHC, Vin-X is an OHV The 4x4 versions of the SOHC have an extra "balancer shaft" inside to help eliminate some possible vibrations/reverberations. There are people who successfully used the 2WD engines in a 4x4 without problems... Essentially the "long blocks" are all the...

    torque converter install problems

EXACTLY!!! Pulled the tranny out Thurs. and after securing it vertical, took the bellhousing off, tried to remove the shaft, and finally broke loose. gathered up gaskets/orings etc and a new Tcase gasket and back together, where we should have been last Sunday :)

    torque converter install problems

I found this pix on the frankentranny rebuild page that showed the difference in a4/4r (previous pix) and the 5R does look like this...

    torque converter install problems

I found this picture of Glaciers A4LD build. Is this what the pump is supposed to look like for the 5R55E also? Note the bearing race shown. On our pump, we saw 2 rows of needles with a carrier - no outer race. Also I was told that the output (small inner) shaft should only be protruding...

    torque converter install problems

Got seal from dealer. Tried without the seal in place and still couldn't get mated. Removed the bell housing and tried installing on the bench and it went right in. Re-installed bellhousing and again several hours of trying unsuccessful

    torque converter install problems

Still no luck, so we pulle dthe seal out to see better inside. I can see now how much play there is on the pump and would make it difficult. Still no luck engaging. Once engaged, will the pump turn easily? Also our local Adv auto list seal for the 4R but not the 5R tranny - anyone have a part...

    torque converter install problems

A good part of last night was spent doing this - all 3 of us tried (with some kicking also involved  ) Then tried with a dowel pin poking beyond the seal to find where the 2 notches should be, tried again and still no luck...

No bolts... Engine is out - cannot get the TC (torque converter) to fully mate on the transmission (see above measurements)

    torque converter install problems

Just to add, the TC, flexplate, and spacer are all from existing vehicle. 2 days of trying to install engine and only made it to the pins just to the edge of the bellhousing. Need to get this done and out of borrowed garage - any help or ideas appreciated.

    torque converter install problems

'97 Exp 4.0SOHC, 5R55e Doing an engine swap - old motor was froze so converter was pulled with engine. Trying to install converter on the shaft and will not go in the last inch or so - measured 1-5/8" from engine to end of flex plate, and just over 1 inch from bell housing to TC pads... Read...

How to replace upper intake manifold gaskets

This picture shows the injectors with the rings on the right one - the left does not have the top oring installed. The right is a good example of a leaking bottom oring as it sucked dirt and grease past the ring... Always put the orings on the injectors first. Lube them up with oil so they slide...

Best Explorer Shocks for the SMooOOTHES ride?

On my Sport, I had Gabriel Gas shocks on when I bought it (I was never partial to Gabriel's as we had problems with them years ago...) and they had a great smooth and controllable ride until one rear blew out. I replaced with RS5000's as I used these on all my full size Bronco's and F150's and...

    helplessly lost

Did you relieve the pressure? Running it without the FP relay until it stalls will use up much of the pressure, but try the schraeder valve on the fuel rail to get it to zero.

    Fuel injection system cleaner bottle

This type (OTC) can run thru the vacuum line with adapter hose - similar to manually feeding seafoam in as mentioned in several threads here, cleaning the combustion chamber. It also can be pressurized with your air compressor, using special fuel injector cleaner and connected to the fuel...

    SEAFOAM question...

Be sure your engine is full operating temperature when doing this and it's less likely they will foul. It should bake off from the heat.

Tell me when to blow it up :) Idle issue Still

The top o-ring will leak fuel if they are bad - but will usually evaporate too fast to notice. The lower is a "vacuum" and will suck air (and dirt) causing a lean condition, sending a signal to pump more fuel for the whole bank (left or right side). Did you examine your sparkplugs removed?

Tell me when to blow it up :) Idle issue Still

I'm 100% certain that you're100% uncertain. (sorry-I couldn't resist... ) Are the codes gone now that the Motorcraft plugs are in? What did the old plugs look like? can you take a picture and post? Reading plugs is very helpful. Yes the exhaust could cause an errant idle. You...

Need Help Cant figure out rough idle!

Not necessary for yours (Coil on plugs). The wires are low voltage signal wires. When you changed your plugs, did you clean your coils and apply fresh dielectric grease? The spark could be arcing to ground through the old dirty grease if you didn't.

Tell me when to blow it up :) Idle issue Still

Something is causing it to be "out of range" of the IAC adjustment. Most likely as above stated, a vacuum leak, or possibly MAF sensor bad or dirty. Although very thorough with your descriptions, diagnosis usually has to be done "at hand". We need codes and more technical readings as MrShorty...

    high idle after "cleaning"?

You really shouldn't do this. There is a detailed procedure for setting your "base" idle with this screw - depending on the vehicle, and is like this: Disconnect IAC connector. Remove Spout jumper Place (.x..") feeler gauge under set screw. Start engine and adjust set screw to (x..) idle speed...

    Is AMSOIL worth it?

Similar situation... Racing on dirt, we had a sponsor that supplied our team with a 5 gal bucket of Pennsoil Synthetic 75W90 gear lube for the quick change rearend. Generally you would change the gearing (remove 2 gears and replace with 2 different) after the heat races based on track...

Power Steering Fluid Flush: 4.0 SOHC

Is it possible that P.S.fluid may have higher concentrations of additives for the seals, as it is mostly used for "topping off" as opposed to full flush. Normal people ;) don't go to the effort to flush the systems unless there are problems.

    smelly, black exaust

Keep reading and searching... Without codes, or even with codes, it is a process of elimination. You did plugs, what about the wires? You did air filter, what about fuel filter? Did you check fuel pressure? If pressure is OK, maybe (quite possibly with 200K miles) fuel injectors are clogged...
