depends what you want the "shift-kit" (brand name like Hoover or Kleenex) to do. Some kits out there are bad or options in them are not needed, others try to give the trans a longer life some are tuned just for harder shifting. Theres a lot of talk about certain kits wearing the overdrive band on wide open throttle (W.O.T) shifts, I have one of these kits in my other car and it might be coincidence but the OD band was fried to rivets within 5000miles, while on the other vehicle it was still ok. You can adjust most things with a tuner (pressures, firmness etc), so might go that way... no tools needed
Main purpose for most is to eliminate slipping which causes heat which causes your trans to burn up sooner, down side is the less slipping hits harder on the driveline, internal trans parts and wears those down quicker.
Only reason Im using one is if you produce more power theres a chance of slippage and increasing pressure will reduce the chance of that. I have to have harder shifts due to some internal friction materials I am using will not last long with excessive slippage.
