i have read in other threads that the oil pressure gauge in our explorers is, in fact, an idiot light, that it shouldnt change unless there is VERY low oil pressure, at which point, it would veer to the far left(as explained in the how to convert your dummy oil gauge into a real guage thread). in my experience, however, i have found that the gauge does indeed move and seems to indicate pressure. my gauge usually points straight down right between the R and M in NORMAL. however, the other day i was driving, i noticied it was at the beginning of the N, so i pulled over, checked my oil and low and behold, i was down a quart! So did the First gens(mine is a 92) have a real pressure gauge? or was my experience just a fluke (maybe a result of it being hot out, and as heat increases, so does resistance) so maybe it was just the wire leading to the gauge getting hot and not carrying as much current as it should? does anyone else have a first gen and noticed that the oil pressure light actually seems to work as its supposed to?

At one time I thought the gauge was just slow on our '92. Turned out that if was moving because of voltage changes (regulator wasn't working very well) from bringing up the rpms.

You can tell if you have a real gauge (e.g. it has been modified) by looking at the sending unit. If the sending unit is only about 1" wide then it is the on/off style. If it is 2"+ wide then it has been modified.

BTW.. With our modified gauge, when the engine is hot, at idle our pressure gauge reads at about the N in normal (it was 95F outside) and when I bring the rpms up to about 2000ish It moves up to the A. There is a big swing once the engine is warm.

If you need pics of the sending unit, let me know.. I have a spares in the truck (I think I have one of each in there)..
