Hello to everyone and Happy Thanksgiving and an early Merry Christmas!

Just a few minutes ago was my first visit to this Forum and I'm impressed by the size of this community.

I few days ago I got my son's 1998 Ford Ranger which is a 2.5L, 5 speed, regular-cab with about 90,000 miles(just getting broken-in good). Needless to say he ran it very hard. My first goal is to replace the parking brake cable that is broken. Without a doubt the cable is broken because it is dangling from the parking brake assembly inside the cab. I haven't crawled under it yet but just by looking at it from the outside it looks like he also zip-tied the cable housing to keep it from falling to the ground - I can't say for sure though?

Can anybody give me some advise / How-To? Thank You in advance!

where is the rest of the parking brake line? the one coming from the rear drums?

you can prolly get a new/used one from a junkyard and just replace it. make sure it is from a 98-00 (00+?) because I know when I swapped my 92 rear into my 98 (for a higher gear), I had to use the 98 parking brake cable because the 92 one was adjustable. if you need me to take pics of mine, just let me know.

p.s taking off the bed will prolly help you out A LOT.

Thanks pickupman2!

I checked the only junkyard in my area with the cost being about half of what a new one would cost and it's without a warranty. When I was in town I stopped at AutoZone and they quoted me $20 for one manufactured by Tru Torque.

I had never thought of taking the bed off - that sounds like it will make it easier.

the hardest part I had was removing the parking brake form the rear drums.

once you take the bed off, jack up the rear (under the axle) and setup jackstands. you will have to take the wheels off and the drums as well in order to get to where the parking brake connects to the each drum.

PM me if you want, I'll give ya my number if ya got any questions while you are doing it.

Thanks once again, so far my biggest problem is getting the time to actually work on the truck. The weather is about to get colder and I'm going to try and take the easy way out - talk my sons into helping?

I'll PM you if I run into a snag.
