I just wanted to put some information out there about this company and their website. The company is Spectre performance. They have all sorts of automotive parts and a great website http://spectreperformance.com. The most noteworthy aspect of their product line is their modular intake parts. They provide a wide variety of tubing and components that allow you to make pretty much any intake configuration that you can imagine. The best part of all this is the prices and the fact that their parts are available at many "common" autoparts stores and online stores (summit and jegs).

I was able to make an intake for my 2000 Explorer Sport SOHC for slightly over $100! Check out some pictures.....

Before...... (this is when I had just put a cone filter onto my stock intake system, the cost of this was about $44 and that is inculded in my total calc above)

And after.....

There were a few minor hickups during the install (grommit kit wouldnt accomadate the plastic hardline tube and I didnt have my dremmel so boring the hole out more was a bit of a task but I made it work. Also created my own grommit out of some surgical tube. I also had to modify the breather slightly to get it to fit)
Other than those to small issues (that were caused mostly by me not having all my tools with me) the install was very easy.

Overall, Spectre offers a great variety of parts for various applications. They are definitly worth a look next time you are in the market.

I notice about the prices I mentioned..... I am in Delaware at college, so no tax.

Wow, that looks great! Could you just list what parts you used to construct that setup? I'd totally be interested in somethin like that. It looks fantastic. And for a hundred bucks.. wow what a steal. I just went on the site but I'm not sure exactly what sizes I'd need. I have a 99 sohc, so its the same setup. Thanks for post!

haha. It is hardly clean. Ever since I had to take the ex in for a recall I havent really been able to clean the engine like I used to do to the way they set up the new wiring harness. Sometime soon I will have to clean it up again and make everything look good. Now with the shiney new intake it will really look boss.

Pepboys is where I got all my stuff. Autozone carries their products as well.

Glad to help

I do not know the part numbers off the top of my head but I will give you the common names. Also, I had to go with 3 inch tube because of my throttle body spacer (eventually I will remove it and go with a 3.5 or 4 inch intake)

You will need.....
A ford MAF adaptor (small or large) depending on what your MAF is like
$19.99 if I remember correctly
A 3inch 45 degree tube
I will say $14 because I lost the receipt (rounded up)
A 3inch 22 degree tube
Should be same price as 45 degree
No coupler will be needed between these if you go with three inch, they both come with plastic collars, you will only need one.

Two 3inch couplers (in my case the one that had to fit over the back half of the MAF was a bit of a stretch because it was about 3.25 inch, but it should fit. Use a heat gun if you need to, just be careful. And definitly remove the MAF sensor during the process).
I want to say they were 7.99 but I will round up to $10 for the sake of argument.
Lastly you will need an air filter. You can get any filter that will fit over the 4inch MAF adaptor. I got the $25 Spectre filter in red. They also make a larger filter but it might not fit and costs $45 I believe.

You will also need to be able to drill for the sensor (plastic hardline) I just went ahead and bought Spectres drilling kit. Problem was the hole was slightly too small and the grommits were way to small. I ended up having to use the knurled end on a rachet to bore the hole out more haha (my dremmel was in another state) and I used a small piece of surgical tubing to create a grommit.

If you want to eliminate the crankcase breather from you intake (which I would reccommend highly due to the fact that it vents all the hot gases and oil vapor from your crankcase into you intake system, which in turn is a major cause for the oily build up that occurs in your throttle body). You will need to purchase a breather filter to replace the tube with. The one I purchased was about $10 but it did not quite fit. I took a razor blade and trimmed some rubber out of it, they seperated the rubber from the filter and stretched it some with needle nose pliers. Then I applied some Seafoam deep creep to it (sprayed on my finger and rubbed on the grommit so as not to shoot it up the filter) and pushed it down on the tube on the crankcase. Then I tightened the hose clamp down really snug to hold it in place. That set up should work until I can find one that fits. So heres the list...
1. 45 degree Tube $14
2. 22 degree Tube $14
3. Two 3inch Couplers (your choice of color) $20
4. Ford MAF adaptor (large or small) $20
5. Air filter Spectre or otherwise that will fit 4inch tube $25
6. (just for my install, you could use a dif soulution) Surgical tube $2 a foot (you wont need more than 3 inchs haha)
7. Breather Filter $10

Total= $105 give or take

I may have missed something, probably, but I will be glad to answer any other question.
One thing I should mention is the 3 inch tube is basically plastic, I found this out when I drilled into it. So far it has performed great so its not an issue. I will eventually remove my TB spacer and go with bigger tube. The same day I did my truck I did my buddies 98 Camaro in 4inch tube take a look.....

Also if you need any pics of my setup for reference just let me know.

Full on Before and then after

Just wanted to post the "true" (before I made the induction kit with the MAF adaptor and filter) and after.

OK, hope that helps with a visual for how much of a change occured.

Also, I forgot to mention that in the after pics the top "guard" that covers the intake manifold is not replaced for the pictures.

What do you use to clean you engine bay? Mine looks horrific, have never cleaned it.

Also, did you have that throttle body spacer on there before you made this intake? If so, did it make any different in HP, etc?

Wow, that is a scary clean engine. Chrome intake tube looks sick.

See to me, being a detailer, my engine looks not that clean at the moment. Since I had the recall fixed I use a spray cleaner and rag to just wipe stuff down and then some detail spray to shine things up (some people use tire shine). Before the recall, I would bag up anything that shouldnt get wet (wiring harnesses, intake, etc...) then I would use an all purpose degreaser all over the engine bay and a brush to scrub everything. Then I would spray it off with a hose and then blow all excess water out with an airhose. Then I would spray detail/tireshine on it to shine it up. Honestly I havent cleaned my engine in quite awhile, but if you clean it then shine it up a little, it tends to keep it looking nice for awhile. It also helps that I havent been offroad in awhile haha.

Main thing with the throttle body spacer I saw was an increase in MPG. There is alot of debate on whether or not they work (I am going to stay out of it). All I can say is it has given me some benefit, so I am not going to complain about it. Although, I might end up removing it in order to make an intake with bigger tubing. So, I figure the new intake should offset anything that I might lose from the TB spacer.

Thanks for the reply, ray. I appreciate the list and posting of pics. One last thing I'm not sure if you've mentioned it already... is there a bracket or something that you used to mount the end of the intake to the body? I couldn't entirely tell from the pics. Let me know what you're using to mount it at the end (where the filter is) and where you got it. Thanks for listing all the parts you used. Looks great, man! Oh, and also, that breather filter, where did you get that? I always wondered why my throttle body was so friggin' grimy when I cleaned it!!! There's always like nasty residue and crap that just tarnishes it. Why you think Ford would just reattach it to the intake tube? Is it okay to remove that hose and replace it with the filter?

I actually removed the bracket I was using when I installed the tube(the TB spacer causes the intake to rest on the fan shroud so it is pretty secure). I was using a Spectre intake bracket kit, it sells for $11.99 around here (everything I bought for the intake was bought at Pepboys unless otherwise noted).

Here are some shots that show it.....

Those are the best I have that show the bracket. In addition to that bracket, you can see in some pictures that there is a lexan guard I made (I would never reccommend using lexan again haha very difficult to work with when it is your first time using the material haha) that also supports it some. The main reason I made it was to protect it from any water being blown onto the filter by the fan (paranoid about water haha) As for the breather filter, I also purchased that at pepboys (I had to alter it as I stated earlier, you could also detach the hose from the intake and put the filter on the end of the hose) As far as I know it is fine to take the hose off, other people on the site have done it. I will say though I am searching for a filter that will fit better. It is important that you make sure that filter dosent get wet. If I missed anything just let me know. Thanks for the question and good luck with all you projects.

For the Plastic Hardline

I just wanted to post some pics that show how I got that plastic hardline to fit into the new intake.

I used some latex tubing (surgical tube) that I purchased at Lowes. It was something like $1.04 a foot. I purchased it to make the rubber guard you can see on the black intake guard I made that fits right next to the fender. I was glad I had purchased more than I needed because it ended up saving my butt when I made the intake. I took a section of the tube (approx. 2.5 inch) and split it down the middle. Once I had bored the hole out enough to fit the hard line into, I then sprayed it with some deep creep and slipped it into the hole (with either side of the spilt on opposing side of the tube). Then I held onto the tubing/homemade grommit and pushed the tube in. Once it was in I pulled on the homemade grommit some with needlenose pliers to ensure I good fit.

I hope this helps anyone that is interested in a similar mod. It is definitly worth it for the price.

I also took some more shots of the new intake with all guards in place.

Good luck, and thanks for the questions. If anyone has any questions please ask, I am definitly willing to help anyone who needs it.
