...My X has been sitting for a couple months and I pulled it out to start on some repairs...I noticed a CEL and just checked it...

...The code is:
85 #O #R Canister Purge Solenoid circuit failure.

...Before I run out and buy a SPV, I am hoping there may be some answers here, or test I may run...:scratch:

...Please help me...:shifty_ey ... before I start carefully tinkering with it and wind up taking a BFH to it...:hammer:

Was it a KOEO or CM code or both?

KOEO 85 should be easy. EEC-IV isn't very smart on these, and my experience has been that it either means a full open or a short to ground in the CANP solenoid circuit. A wiring diagram and a voltmeter and you should be able to track this down pretty easy.
 






...I drove it a few times today before I checked the codes, and it is both...

...My first thought is that it is a sticky valve as the CEL shows up (after reset and a cold engine) as soon as pressure should build up..About 2 seconds after start up...You can hear the idle change and the light pops...Mind you, it was in the 80's here today...
 






...Today's update...:(

...I pulled the hose off the intake and it had oil in it...I figured that drained down to the SPV...I grabbed a used SPV at the JY to do some other test...

...I replaced the hose from the intake to the SPV...I checked the hose from the cannister to the SPV...I then checked the hose and the plastic elbow from the cannister to the metal line at the frame rail...

...The elbow was packed with rubber from the inside of the hose coming apart and being sucked up into there...After replacing all this, I purchased a new SPV and still no luck...In the next couple days I am going to pull the hose from the fuel tank and blow it out to make sure it is not blocked also...;)

...A long time ago I had seen a definition on how the SPV works between vacuum and electronic control but can't find it now...

...I will probably also replace the canister before long...I would appreciate any other ideas...:D

I'd still say it's electrical. The PCM doesn't have any way of knowing if the valve opened or of measuring flow through the EVAP system. all it can see is the voltage change on the circuit when it closes the switch, and it triggers the code if it doesn't see that change.
 






...You wouldn't happen to know where I can find any testing procedures or wiring diagram's specific to the SPV on a 91 X would you???...:D
 






It's looks like there's only 2 wires to the Canister Purge Valve (red and Gray/yellow) The red wire is spliced into quite a bit of other things and you would have a lot more problems if it wasn't powered. The gray/yellow wire goes straight to the PCM........According to Haynes, there is no real checks for the '94 and earlier EVAP system other than verifying the gas cap is in working order...........lol

And that Gray/Yellow wire is a straight shot to Pin 31 if you suspect a broken wire. The red one can be traced back to the PCM at pins 37 or 57.
 






It's a pretty basic DC circuit, as noted, so, if you have a basic understanding of DC electricity, you can diagnose the circuit with nothing more than a wiring diagram and a voltmeter. Recognize that the CANP solenoid has a constant +12 V (the red wire) and the PCM acts as a ground side switch.

I've found that the wiring diagram in Chiltons/Haynes seem to be adequate for this circuit.
 






...A little insight please..

...I've been real busy replacing all kinds of stuff on my X this week so this has been on the last to do list and hopefully will be remedied this week...

...Just for kicks I found a test for my SPV...Do an ohms test and it should read 30-40 which is what is considered a good SPV...My new one reads out at 64.6 and my old one does not register at all...

...This would mean my old one is bad but my question is, the new one is out of range so I'm wondering if that could be the fault also???...I just need to get another??
 






Depending on the circuit, any resistance above or below the allowed tolerance could open or close the valve. I would assume that 30-40 ohms is the nominal resistance that keeps the valve closed. So if it's reading high all the time, the valve would remain open all of the time. Plus, the computer would see the resistance (as a voltage drop across the high resistance) was always high and throw a CEL. It would be easy enough to check. Go to Radio Shack and buy a 30-40 Ohm resistor (extremely cheap item) and plug it in. If it solves the problem......replace the valve.
 






...I just happened to buy the my brand new SPV at Autozone while I was picking up my performance power steering pump...It's brand new from them, and I know better...:banghead:

...The replacement will be there after 5pm and so will I, along with my digital meter..;)

...I will have to find another supplier locally that will price match...

...I took my SPV back to AZ with my digital meter in hand...They ordered 2 more in from the warehouse just to be safe...Switched my ohms setting for simplicity and showed and tested mine out in front of them...It showed 65....We tested the 2 that just came in from the warehouse and they tested @ 64...

...They pulled their tech guy into the mix and he grabbed my meter, checked it's settings, and tested all 3...He looked up at the manager and replied, "No Bueno"..

...The manager looked at me and said," We can probably get you one from another one of our stores"...I was like :wtf: , "no thank you"...

...I ran over to Pepboy's and they would have to order one in...The warehouse only showed one...I decided not to wait another day or 2 and will continue my search for my SPV locally..:burnout:
 






Pretty odd that you have 3 new units that all read the same......are you sure the testing procedure is accurate??
 






...Yes...And that's why they double checked with my tester...The tech guy then went over and grabbed his from under the counter...Identical...:biggthump

...For the last year or so, AZ has been selling some junk parts that keep getting posted here, from Fuel pumps to coil pack's ..

....These SPV's I am having the problem with are made by Duralast and they are P/N PV213
 






I was just reading another thread about it......makes you wonder how they stay in business. (tho i prefer AZ over AA!) You should try buying the 30-40 ohm resistor at Radio Shack and plugging it in to verify it is the fix. It'll cost you no more than $1-2. But I guess if you know the part is bad, there's really no point.......

1991-94 MODELS

1. Remove the CANP solenoid.

2. Measure the resistance between the two CANP terminals.
A. If the resistance is between 30-40 ohms, proceed to the Step 3.

B. If the resistance is not between 30-40 ohms, replace the CANP solenoid.
