Local guy I met thru the Mustang club here is converting his new V6 Mustang to a
V8 and is selling me his 40k mile 4.0 for $400 ..

my engine already has some timing chain noise all the time not just when I start it meaning its gonna need replacement timing guides, tensoiners and chains soon so this is great since there is no way I would mess with all that on a 139k engine

Also won an Ebay auction on a complete STS turbo kit for a 4.0 V6 Mustang
with upgrade injectors,intercooler,etc,
new cost $4500 , my cost $500 ... Ill still need to fab some stuff up but
by looking at Pics I think its an easier install than it is in the Mustang.
Im thinking I can get it all done for under $2000 and at low boost (7-8lbs) it should dyno at 300-350 rwhp .. guys are running twice that much on the new Mustangs and not blowing them up ( yet anyways )
Should make it a bit more fun to drive and keep me busy till boating season comes back around.

Bargains!

Congratulations on your newly acquired bargains! I'll be interested in any differences you encounter between the Mustang and Explorer SOHC. I might consider an engine swap instead of a rebuild if I could find a similar bargain.

I think if I ever went to forced induction I would choose a supercharger instead of a turbo. It seems like it would be a much simpler installation.

Keep us all updated as you progress.

Good deal. Yeah, you should see those numbers with that boost range and things are still reliable at that level.

The difference in the motors will be the intake, DBW, PCM tune, among some other small things but the internals are pretty much the same.

compared to the Xcharger or Banshee eaton blowers you are correct it is a bit more involved but I cant fathom paying $3000 to $4000+ for a measly 60-70hp and so far I have never seen a used one for sale..
As far as I know the only bolt on supercharger kits for the Explorer 4.0
are the Xcharger and the Banshee.

Im just getting the longblock, thats how I got that price since
he can sell off all the stuff I dont need. Originally I was just gonna
add some headers and call it a day but the turbo kit cost me same
as pair of headers and will make a "bit" more power..
:)

Since your relatively close by and have done this
I hope I can bend your ear when I start this..

Before I swap engines though Im gonna
throw in a 100hp jet in the nitrous and some
short drag tires and hit the track.
Like to have some comparison between the juice and the boost.
;)

LOL, I see you are going to skip 15's and possibly 14's with the new combo when it's all tuned and finished. I think Jakee went 13.5 with 9lbs? I would love to see how the 4.0 holds up with a 100 shot and if it makes it, keep upping the boost till she pukes:D Just don't ruin the tranny or rearend. How soon can we expect results from the 100 shot?

the 100 shot will be on the current engine before i swap in the newer one.
Wouldnt want to risk hurting the new one.

Tranny might be a problem but not the rear end, the 8.8 can take a lot more punishment
than any 4.0 can put out :) My Lincoln had 496rwhp and weighed 4000+
and the 8.8 rear never had any problems..

Wont be until after the silly season probably, right now I have a gig
in Dallas for a week then another one here in Austin, then I have to start getting ready
for my year end party I have every year so Im gonna be hella busy till after new years..

With new engine and turbo I would be happy with mid 14s , frankly the Sport
is not the best platform for a putting down a ton of power on the street,
the longer wheelbase Explorer is a much better platform for that.
The short wheelbase and heavy weight makes for twitchy traction
especially with the 4x4 turned off.
I have already had it go sideways a couple times when it hits second
gear and in the rain it is really tail happy.
Fun as hell drifting in wet empty parking lots though.. :D

Most of the time..
Occasionally listening to some Fortune 500 CEO blather on for a couple hours
can get on your nerves though,LOL..

Actually, the sport model (non 4x4) will go faster than the reg explorer just because of the weight factor.

You'll be in the 13's when you get everything right; even with 4x4 there's no doubt in my mind.

I ran a 13.4 with 9 LBS of boost and on street tires. Street tires would not let me rev the motor past 2200 off the line and they were 29" tall. I honestly think just by changing tires (smaller and wider - like I have now) I would run a very low 13. Maybe the cold weather and a little luck would land 12's. I'll never know because I'm changing some things up.

No problem on the help. The only thing for me is finding the time to talk; I promised SVO and others I would call and haven't yet. Work has me tied up from 8 to 5 and I'm usually working from home after, but will have to make time to talk with you guys. I get on the forums just to take a break.

No problem, hell Ill drive to your house and bring some steaks to
grill up while we talk!
:)

so ur gonna put a turbo on ur sport

gonna try :)

It would be better for you to start tearing into it and get as far as you can. Once you're ready, I'll drive up there and help out with the final touches. Just keep me posted on the progress and I’ll let you know when I think you’re ready for me.

Take Pictures. It will let me know how you're doing things and what I should expect.

Been forever but anyways the updates are
1. sold the turbo kit,, I needed the money basically, with a boat , two explorer , a mustang and a diesel truck I just couldnt justify the outlay and I made $1000 on the kit over what I paid.
2. Just now swapping in the Mustang 4.0, also converting to 2wd, found a low milage 2wd 5r55e out of a Ranger for $150 , we took it apart, clean as a whistle inside, did all the valve body and solenoid upgrades and buttoned it back up, took out the transmision , transfer case, front axle out a and just pulled engine today. So far its taken me a month working bit by bit in my spare time, all I can say is by comparison swapping the 5.0 in a fox body is baby work. What a pain in the butt and oh my god is there a crap load of wiring in this thing. Good thing i did pull the front axle and transfer case otherwise it would have been even harder. I can tell you there are a lot of little brackets and crap that are NOT going back on,LOL..
I thought about putting on some shorty headers but after comparing the stockers to them I dont think it would make any real difference.

So thats the update, the Xsport is already setup with a dry nitrous system, I just never used it yet but will as soon as its back up and running well. Not the same as a turbo but it will have to do.. Just the fact I am pulling close to 450lbs out of the vehicle should put me in the solidly mid 15s , a safe 75shot and 15" slicks (have those as well , have a lot of crap laying around ! ) should get me in the low 14s , not ground shaking but enough to have fun .
I figured this was gonna take me a bit to get all done so I bought myself a $2800 beater to drive around in until the Xsport gets back on the road, gets 21mpg in my normal combined hill/hwy/city driving and is a fun cruiser, slower than the Xsport from 0 - 60 though due to the crappy 2.73 gears and aode.
Ill get to working on those later , have a supercharge 540" boat engine to freshen up before march...
