Blown tranny... Sorry man. My '92 did the same thing between 1st & 2nd.

DId it just start doing it since it is turning cold outside?

Could be the famous governor problem.

This IS a fix that almost anyone with a bit of mechanical skill can accomplish at home in the driveway. Don't even have to drop the pan on the transmission.

No does it all the time, only owned the vehicle for a month

engine revs up for about 2 seconds at 20mph then it shifts fine

In any case, investigate the thread about the governor problem. That is most likely your culprit -- a very common and very easlily fixed issue.

Sounds more like its going into neutral when it tries to shift into 2nd than a governor issue....check the torque on the bands, the intermediate band could be broken.

I've actually had the governor problem on two different A4LD transmissions. What he is describing is EXACTLY what happens.

That, and always make the easiest fix first, then move up to more difficult issues. On transmissions that means (1) fluid level (2) fluid condition (3) filter (and while the pan is dropped, check for metal/clutch material in the pan -- it will be there if larger problems exist) (4) vacuum modulator and line to engine (5) governor (6) valve body issues (7) torque converter (8) broken hard parts inside the transmission requiring a complete rebuild.

Only at stage 7 does the entire transmission need to be removed from the vehicle, and at stage 8 does it need to be opened up for rebuild.

The governor is SUCH an easy fix that I would do it no matter what, then move on from there.
