So after fixing the tires / rims, radiator, and brakes, my girlfriend came home and told be a cop gave her a warning for having a brake light out. No big deal till I found out the previous owner had no clue what he was doing with electrical work. He wired in a trailer harness with what looks like bubblegum and electrical tape. So I now need to buy a new wiring harness to fix the problem correctly. So what my question is, is can anyone give me the correct part number for a tail light harness for a 92 XLT. I've called the local parts stores and no help there. I gave them the part number I found on the harness itself but no help there either. The number is F17B-14A464-BB. So if any of you guys know where I can get a new one please let me know.

Just an update. I found out that the reason I cant find the harness is because it is a dealer part. So, I just went to my local pic-n-pull and pulled it off one they had there, but now I have a new problem. After replacing both harnesses I still don't have a brake light. The light comes on but goes out when I hit the brakes. I'm not really good with electrical stuff so any advice would help a lot.

Is what you are saying is: The Running Lights comes on But turns off and no brake lights when you step on the Brake?
Both sides or 1 side?

If this is true , you definetly have a Grounding issue.

Ok so I have running lights but when I hit the brakes only the driver side brake light goes out, the passenger brake light comes on like normal. When I release the brake both running lights come back on. I'm pretty sure your right and I have a grounding problem but I have no clue about electrical stuff. I replaced the harness with one I got out of a pic-n-pull. I've been trying to find the wiring diagram on here but no luck. All the threads that did have a link to the diagrams no longer work. So if anyone has an updated link to the diagrams and some easy instructions on finding a ground it would be a great help.
Thanks,
Mark

Hooray the brakes are fixed. Thank you so much Tony for your help. Come to find out the tweeker who had the truck before me had spliced the wire from the brake light switch next to the brake pedal for some sort of ground effects / hover light things I guess. I do have one last question about this problem. Does anyone know the actual name for the switch next to the brake pedal. I tried searching for a brake light switch and a stop lamp switch with no results.

I was thinking 'Brake switch', 'Brake Pedal switch ' NOPE, search 'Stop switch'

I fixed one the other day for a friend. it seems to work proper if you leave out the Bushings on the Pedal.

The install is the same on your first Gen. I think I left off Item #7 and it worked. Others have found the same to be true.

Well I thught I had fixed the problem but I was wrong. Thanks to this forum I have finally found the problem, it turns out its the Turn Signal Switch. I have to lift the turn signal slightly to get it to mke contact. Unfortunately it cost $137 at the parts store and the pic-n-pull is closed tomorrow, so I'l have to wait till next weekend to get it fixed. Wish me luck

I have the same issue. Sorry but your description that the Light goes out when you step on your brakes confused me. I thought that The running light went out too.

What you meant was 'when you step on the brakes Only the Passenger side lights.'

Yeah My wife is just in the habit of lift the Directional stalk a bit after making a Left turn. You can actually hear a little click when it's up high enough.

Well I got lucky and found a pic-n-pull that was open today so I just picked up a new one for $35. Just got done putting it in and works great, but . . . . . while I was installing the new turn signal switch I noticed the key (ignition) switch has a broken piece on it. Not a problem yet, but I think I found next weekends project.

Edit: Sorry I called it the key (ignition) switch, I meant to say the lock & tumbler has a broken peice with a wire coming from it. I looked at the part the part on Autozone but I didn't see any wires coming form it so I'm not sure. Like I said not a problem yet I guess I'll just wait till next weekend and he back out to the pic-n-pull to see if I can find a new one. Does anyone know if I can have it rekeyed to match the keys I have now?

Did the Cluster have to come out to get the Plastic off the Steering column to get to the Directional Switch? We are used to just lifting teh Stalk a bit but it would be nice to replace it.

No I left the cluster in place. It may be easier if you take the two bolts out that support the steering column but aside from that I just took the covers off the steering column itself then it had two screws holding the turn signal switch in place and three connectors actually attached to the switch. All together maybe a half hour of work. Easy fix and pretty cheap if you can find a switch at your local pic-n-pull.

Thanks, I kept hearing how the Cluster had to be taken out to get the Top Cover off. Just take out the hardware from the lower cover and they come off like a clamshell?

Yup pretty easy. You may have to muscle the top half a little but not to much, I mean if I can do it a ten year old could do it. :)

That wire with the plastic clip is for the door chime. It slides into a groove under the lock cylinder. It contacts the key when it is in and grounds out the wire, causing the door chime to be on with the door open.

If the clip isn't busted you should be able to just put it back in.

People who mess with the wiring (even so-called "Professional" installers) are really stupid more often than not it seems. Be careful, make sure there is nothing with peeling tape or that is loose which can short out and cause a fire. If they couldn't twist two wires together and solder them, do you think they put a fuse in?

This was what the underside of my dash looked like. Done by a stereo shop according to the previous owner. It was no wonder it didn't work, everything got kicked and ripped out because it was hanging down.... I removed it all...

The only thing that worries me about it is all the other wiring that this guy has done. The guy who owned it before me did so many things wrong that it all worked, if you can believe that. So, now as I repair one thing I find another thing broken. I didn't plan for this to be a project car but it is now and I'm actually enjoying myself. There is something satifiying about doing the repairs yourself.

Agreed.

You might want to just go to the pick-n-pull and get the whole wiring harness for the affected area. In the long run it will be easier than attempting to undo a huge mess and splicing who knows how many wires.

I'm really starting to think I just need to buy my gf another car so I can actually get some quality time with my xlt.

I'd say thats a safe bet
