My 2003 ford explorer's cruise control is not activating. The on/off buttons are on the steering wheel and nothing happens when i press them. I tried checking the fuses but none are listed as for the cruise control system. The system hasn't worked for a while, but really need for a trip I recently took.

Any sugestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

TJ

So this switch takes care of engaging the cruise control and disengaging when brakes are applied?

cruise control

Try tapping the switch with a small hammer. Not too hard though but enough to jar it. Sometimes the contacts in the pressure switch stay open. Then go for a spin and see if the cruise works.

If the switch is ON it won't permit the cruise to engage. It's what makes your cruise disengage when you step on the brakes. If the switch is failed, it won't permit the cruise to engage.

are U saying that the switch is a normally open (N/O) type then closes when the brakes are applied or are U saying the opposite that the sw is normally closed until brake pressure is applied?

thanks

This switch is normally closed and allows the cruise to work. If you want to test the switch to see if this could be the problem in a faulty cruise system, just unplug the wire harness and then jump the wires with a fuse or other piece of wire.

problem solved

That sw on the master cyl was not the problem. In fact, on my Limited where I have the adjustable pedals, the cruise sw is under the dash and attached to the brake pedal itself. I had a remote start installed last week and the tech accidentally pulled out one of the wires at this sw. We found it when I took it to the dealer. the tech covered the cost. as far as the sw on the master cyl., mine faces down making it nearly impossible to do continuity check on the sw itself though jumping out the connector may have been possible

here is what the sw on my master cyl looks like, vs facing up

The $20 switch on the brake master cylinder is only on those explorer w/o stability control. If you have a switch on your dash that can turn off stability control your switch is on the brake pedal assembly under the dash.

Mine has both. The one on the pedal deactivates the cruise the instant I tap on the pedal. The one on the master cylinder I guess is sort of a back-up. I have to press the pedal down a good ways for it to break circuit.

This is my first post and just wanted to say thanks. My ABS light was coming on every so often and I noticed my cruise control quick working. So I did a google search and one of the results of the search was this thread on the explorer forum. I took a chance and spent $23 for the part and less then a minute installing the part and everything works again. Again Thanks!

My cruise quit working a couple weeks ago then the abs light was coming on, but the problem with mine was the clockspring under the steering wheel.

I'm not sure how the cruise deactivation switch would make the abs light come on?

Cruise stopped working this week. I took the switch from the master cylinder off, cleaned it well and tapped it hard. After cleaning and tapping a few times. I re-installed and went for a spin. Problem solved. I don't know how long it will last but it's working now. This week the parking sensor also went on the blink. Tonight for some reason it's working as well. Thanks for the info. This forum is a great resource.

2003 Sport Trac XLT Cruise Control Failure

My Cruise Control started to fail intermittently. Now when I try to engage the Cruise Switch the Cruise Light flashes but the Cruise Control won't engage. I took my Volt Ohn Meter and checked the Master Cylinder Switch it is normally closed as indicated by the thread. Any other ideas?

What is that pinkish rubber thing on left/bottom of this part. I'm having this same issue right now. Took the part of cleaned up connections etc... mine just has a thread that screws into master cylindar... Does this rubber part come of or something

If you are talking about the cap on the switch it is used to prevent dirt from getting into the switch and is removed when you install the switch.

I got this part from advanced auto part because it came with new wiring harness... however the end not connected to the switch is rectangular and I could not see where it was to be hooked up to. all other wiring is round or oval shaped....

SO i just replaced the switch.... cruise is working again fine...

here is link to part I bought.. Does anyone know where the rectangular end goes???

I assume this also applies to a 2004 Lincoln Aviator that is having the same intermittent on/off problems as the Explorer. The switch on top of the master cylinder.

2002 Ford Explorer xlt

Cruise Control stopped working. Read the posts here and followed the advice about removing the switch in front of the brake fluid container, tapped it firmly and now everything is working as it should. Thanks for the helpful posts.

Instead of making a new thread I decided to contribute here. In regards to changing the switch, if the current switch looks like the replacement does that mean it has previously been replaced?

I ask because my cruise isn't turning on at all, I was going to replace the switch but it looks like the replacement everyone lists and would hate to replace again if that is not the issue.

Thanks for the help.
