I need to repaint my grill on my 95 Explorer, it used to be black back in 95 but now it is fading and I want to bring it back to life.

Can I spray paint it and if someone else has did this, what brand and color did you use? I am a novice at painting anything on a car/truck, if I mask everything well can I do this myself.

I did a search and I did not find any posts that answered my questions, please help.

Thanks

I painted my grill on my 2002 explorer it used to be stock silver and i painted it black came out amazing looks like factory. Since i have a billet grill It didnt matter if i messed it up i wont be putting it on my X. I used spray paint called krylon. first clean it really good then dry then use a scotch bright pad and rough up the surface a bit. then use some sort of alcohol and clean off any debris. then use a light coat of satin black enamel just cover the front and back with a light coat. let dry the krylon is fast drying ,dries in about 10 min especially if its hot out and not humid. Then use couple coats of gloss black enamel waiting shortly in between coats. What i did was did all that waited a day then hit it again with gloss and then couple coats of clear-coat which is essential to make the paint last. Mine came out sick and I will post a pic here today or tomorrow.

I used Rustoleum Flat Black Enamel because it was just laying around, it hasn't faded at all almost a year and a half later..

Just something to look into if you decided to go none-shiny :)

i rattle bombed my first gen grill. i used rustoleum with a flat black finish. but i shoulda scuffed the plastic. i can scratch off the paint with my finger nail. i also primered. but atleast it looks cool for now and i want a new grill anyhow

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I will post pics when I finish.

Yes, use the Dupli-Color trim paint. I painted mine a while ago and it still looks awesome. No clearcoat necessary (and this is in Florida sun). You just gotta make sure you do the proper prep work.

I don't have any close-up photos, but you get the idea:

And one of the rear pillars:

I painted my bumpers with the same stuff, but it didn't hold up as well. But the trim paint really stuck to that grille and the rear pillars.
