the diesel explorer exists, its an optional engine. but of course, its just not available here in the US. it appears to be available in germany though. its a v6 2.7l turbo diesel that puts out 175hp. im unsure of torque though. i have a link but it is translated from german, and is a little hard to understand, here it is:

here is a untranslated version of the page which has a link to the picture gallery:

i have known that there was a diesel X in other countries... the reason we dont have them here is there isnt a demand for it.... gas in other countries is way $$$$

i bet the torque is insane. not only is it a diesel, but turbochrged too. i would love to get one.

We aren't offered the diesel either and our gas (petrol) is the most expensive in the world. No we can't even get an explorer at all as they have dropped it from the range

jeez that would be awesome. i'll love to have a diesel

Unfortunately there are "environmentalists" that don't want there to be diesel engines in the US because they are "dirty and noisy." Hopefully the diesel Explorer program will come back to life...

In 2007 the requirements for diesel engines int he US will change drastically. Many automakers are waiting to introduce new diesels in the US until those requirements are set. they are also exploring many ways to get these diesel engines to meet those stringent requirements. By 2007 the diesel engines will essentially be cleaner then gas engines, while still getting the excellent gas milage and that good old diesel kackle you hear from the "old" diesels will be non-existant. Also for those of you diesel guys...that diesel smell will also be 100% gone.
my Dad drives a new diesel Volvo imported from Eurpoe with the new emmissions technology and the new type of engine in it. The exhaust smells like steam coming off a pot of boiling water...no exhaust smell whatsoever, and it is no louder then the 5 cyl. 2.4 liter gas engine in my dad's old 95 850. When he started it up i figured it was a gas car. He has gotten as high as 45 miles per gallon in this big volvo (It's the large S80 sedan). Also that misconception that diesels are slow is totally wrong..lol. If you put the throttle at 3/4 throttle in this volvo, once the turbo charger kicks in both rear tires squeal. If you give it full throttle...hold on!!

This vehciel was imported as a promotional vehicle for his company, they also imported a Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel (It's been nothing but trouble, but look who manufactures it... ;) )

My Dad brings these 2 cars to various shows and conferences around the US and this volvo amazes people. He let the press drive his car and they were totally impressed. they said they would never know it was a diesel if it wasn;t getting 30 some miles per gallon.

Ford is currently working on a 6.0L next generation powerstroke for the F250/350/Excursion chassis and in the future my Dad has heard there will be a 6 cyl version of the powerstroke in the F150/Expedition chassis and quite possably that same 6 cyl in the explorer/ranger or the 4 cyl engine used in rangers in eurpoe.

Don;t expect ford to offer the smaller diesels until maybe 2006, but from what I hear, my next ford SUV will be a diesel!

It appears that they haven't actually done it yet. If you can decipher the meaning from "Only starting from 2004 an acceptable Diesel Explorer would be conceivable, because diesel engine partner Peugeot wants to have finished provided an adequate 2,7-Liter-V6-TDI with 175 HP up to then for Fords." My limited time in Europe, I have never seen a diesel Explorer but then again I haven't been there a whole lot. One of our European counterparts should be able to chime in with more information. I know the Ranger they sell in Malaysia with a diesel is in no way related to the Ranger we have here in the US. I think it was a 2.2L turbo diesel, but the truck is a lot smaller than the US version. I wouldn't be surprised if Ford did the same to the Explorer in Europe.

Go search on pirate4x4 and rrorc... they've got more downlow on this... appearently ford recently screwed navistar on the F-150 idea, and it's been delayed, which screwed navistar out of alot of money. As of the sploder/ranger getting the same engine as the f-150.. highly doubtful, as it's most likely gonna make a rather powerful f-150... and a smaller engine will go in the sploder/ranger, if it ever happens here
Pete

The 6L PowerStroke will be out for the '03 MY. As for the diesel Explorer in the US, the program had been cancelled not too long ago to wait for the new emissions rules, as 01EB said.

New emissions can't stop you from putting one in your own however. I wanna see someone drop a little 4 banger deisle in their X!

Robert is right, we have never been offered diesel
explorers in any country in europe. But if ford will offer
new explorer us europeans in the future i´m sure
that a diesel version will be offered, to raise the sales.

almost all of the new diesels are pretty quiet and don't have that clakity sound people associate them with. 2yrs ago in high school I worked with this kid at MBNA that had a new Jetta TDi, that car was torqy as hell for a 4-banger. Stock, it would roast the tires completley threw 1st. He then had it chipped, exhaust and some other stuff. That car had so much friggen torque for it's size, it didn't car what gear you were in at any speed. 2nd and 3rd gear starts were no problem and he got awsome gas mileage. Plus, the TDi engine with the mods he had would put any ricer to shame when it came to sound. It had a mean growl to it, not that 4-banger buzzy-ness.

My best friend 1st car a was an 84' Turbo Diesel Mercedes. It was slow until the turbo kicked in, then you got a serious shove to the seat. He had a lot of problems with it though, expensive as hell to fix. It was a pretty pimped ride though, rims, new paint that was blue/midnight black mixed ect. ect. Got an Expedition now and loves it up at college in Colorado, only the Audi's and Subaru's can hang with him when it snows:D

Yea, I agree with that. The new common rail diesels
with turbo are very quiet and clean. These new diesels
are no less good for the environment than any gas engine. I´m pretty p!!sed at ford that they doesn´t offer
a diesel option for the Explorer. If they had, the Explorer
had been left in the Ford euro vhiecle program.

I love my TDI. We went to Vegas and back (over 600 miles) on one 13.8 gallon tank of fuel and had just under a quarter tank left when we got home. That included about 4 runs up to 100mph on some of the long straight aways along the way:D

And then there is our Dodge, Cummins. It weighs nearly 7000lbs empty yet still gets 21MPG!

Yeah those trucks with diesels are great. My Dad's company has both a 98 Cummins TD and a 2002 Chevy Duramax they they use as training and test vehicles. I must say i love driving the DOdge...it's a manual trans super cab long bed...I never even use first year...just start her out in second and all is well. The chevy has the Allison automatic trans, and all I can say about that one is it's pretty fast for a big pickup....it seems faster then the dodge, but it's an auto so thats prolly why.
My neighbor behind me has a 2000 Ford E350HD cargo van and he said even when hauling 8,000 pounds in the back he still averaged 24 MPG. He does a lot of highway hauling. His van has about 500,000 miles on it and still looks new. He said he keeps his diesels for 850,000 miles beofre he trades them. I was dumbfounded when he told me that. 850,000 is unheard of for cars/trucks I thought, but i guess with care and with a nice drivetrain like that it'll keep you going for a while.

I'm amazed also by those trucks with diesels. One of our neighbors has an diesel Excursion. Stock it was nice, but he had Banks do a lot of stuff to it. All I can say is the truck hauls azz and embaresses a lot of cars for mpg. He gets about 21mpg in the city and close to 30 on the highway now. All this while being able to run low 14's in the quarter:eek: And with a tank that big he goes about a month without filling up.

Excuse me if I sound naive or if this has been answered already, but has anyone seriously considered dropping a diesel in their X?

It would be nice ........I like diesel. It would be even kewler if you could throw a 7.3 powerstroke in instead.

The 7.3 diesel would not work in an explorer because the frame can not handle an engine that powerful or that heavy. The front suspension would be bottomed out and the front end would have to be lengthened to try it. Now swapping a 4 cyl diesel from a 83-87 ranger might be a possability, but that diesel is kinda small.
