my first tranny when i got the truck which was the original lasted to 200kms...and now i rebuilt it and has only lasted me 14000kms...but thats with wheeling alot...they are not a strong tranny...
My First explorer(92) had 256,000 on it or so when I sold it and to my last knowing of it, It had about 278,000 miles and it was still the original tranny. Of course they were all highway miles. (I also never changed the fluid in it all the while I had it(from 50,000 miles or so) and I hardely ever checked the fluid.) My 94, has 146,000 miles on it right now and to my knowledge it is still the original tranny. It has no signs of leaking or slipping or anything......yet. I have never changed the fluid in it since I've had it and again I rarely ever check it.(I am firm beleiver that you should just leave an automatic alone and let it do what it wants to. If you don't already change the fluid regularly don't mess with it. (I am sure I will be criticized for this statment and I don't recommend not changing fluid to anyone but still, I don't. )) They are probably the weakest tranny I've ever seen myself also, and from the people here on this board that have had problems with them I beleive that for sure. Anywho, I have never changed one yet so I don't know for sure when they go out.
I am sittin at 144K right now, and I know its starting to act up on me... Its so close to makin that 150k mark, but I know it wont last that long... I seriously doubt it haha...

our 93 we just got has 182K miles. as far as i know it is the orginal tranny. we've only put a little over 300 mile on it since we got it and it shifts just fine and no leaks.
As I said once before;
The A4LD transmission was created for the 1985 Bronco II and Ranger by bolting an overdrive unit onto a C-3 transmission. (The C-3 transmission was originally designed for the 1974 Ford Pinto) And since neither truck weighed that much, and they weren't used excessively for towing, the "new" A4LD was a good fit. Six years later, the A4LD had seemingly proved itself as a reliable transmission, and Ford carried it over to their new Ford Explorer. However the Explorer not only weighed a lot more, but it was often used to haul up to five people and a trailer. So, it's not that our transmission was a bad design, it's just wasn't designed for the Explorer.
So the next time you load up your truck with people, gear and a trailer, imagine everyone and everything cramed into a Pinto with a Trailer. You really can't help but smile.
I have 67,000 on my original tranny. Mostly highway miles, some light towing every now and then, and I am usually by myself but have sometimes 4 others with me. No leaks or problems at all.
had to have mine rebuilt last year at about 124,000, but I dont think we ever changed the tranny fluid or anything like that. i took it in a few weeks ago to get a leak fixed and it's still leaking! .
Mine has 136000 on it now....no problems yet. Though I have a feeling that this will change once I start putting 300 or so HP through it after I finish working on my motor this week
300 HP out of a 4.0....There is people here who have tried in vain to do that.NOS, Superchargers, etc.No one has come close.What do you have planned? My hat is off to you if you can pull 250 out of it.I am sure it can be done with enough $$$$$$$!
I'm estimating that I'll be pulling pretty close to 300 at the wheels, which will put me well over 300 at the crank. It's hard to say because I don't know of anyone who has done ALL of these things...most people who have done stuff like this usually have only a few of the things listed above in some combination but have yielded good results.
At any rate, the numbers aren't the endstate I'm looking for....just a lot more power that I can feel.
I had my tranny rebuilt at 124,000 miles and the shop said it had been rebuilt before. The engine started leaking coolent into the oil and bearing material was also in the oil at about 135,000 but that was with lots of abuse and it over heated when the water pump blew during a serious trail. It still drove me home 50+miles after over heating and then ran amost perfect after repairing water pump, in fact engien was warped but it still had more power than the day I got it. But put a fresh engine in anyway instead of waiting to throw a rod. THese things never give up!
