2002 Ford Explorer XLT
I am very new to this forum but I have found it to be very helpful in my car troubles and everyone on here is awesome so I finally decided to register on here. I have a 2002 ford explorer XLT and it did not come with fog lights. I have HID headlights and wanted to get the factory fog lights to put HIDs in to match my headlights. So I am going to buy the factory fog lights but what all would I have to do to make these work? Is it possible to wire them so when i switch my headlights on from inside the car the fogs turn on whenever the headlights do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The short answer is yes, you can wire the fog lights to come on with your headlights. Wired in parallel, they will come on when you turn on your headlights. You have to look at how many amps the headlights and fog lights draw though to see if you are overloading the fuse or wiring. Personally I would wire them to a switch and turn them on and off independantly.

Ok great thanks a lot man. I will take your advice and run them independently. One more question, what kind of wire harness should I get to wire the fog lights and where can I find it cheapest? Thanks again

If you are buying all factory equipment, why not buy the Ford switch and mount it in the dash where it normally goes? Might have to do some dremmel cutting to open the hole (not sure about that as I don't know how Ford blanks off the unused spots). You can buy a spool of automotive wire from any auto parts store and I personally would find a constantly energized source, run that to the switch, fuse the out put and run that to the lamps. No buying any special harness if the lamps didn't come with wiring.

Most auto parts stores only have a limit selection for switches. Don't have a photo (I can take one if you want) of how I mounted the switch for my "Get off my bumper or I'll blind you lights"

Basically, I drilled a couple holes and used a file to make it rectangular and snapped the switch in place. I mounted it just to the left of the steering column on the lower dash. Can't even see it when sitting at the wheel.

when i bought my 02 xlt it didnt come with foglights either. ford sells an OEM foglight integration kit for 2002-2005 explorers for i think $130. it came with the lights, plastic bumper bezels/inserts, 2 relays, all the wiring, and a switch. i will take a picture of where i mounted my switch later but here are before and after shots. the only problem with the kit is that it dosent come with directions so i paid a guy $20 to wire up the right relay and whatnot

Welcome aboard!! :salute:

I would highly recommend using a relay! Improper wiring can have catastrophic results. Click here for an example. Have you checked out this sticky?: Click here for - How to: Auxilary/offroad lites

I have my lights wired so that they can only come on with the parking lights and I have a switch also so I can shut them off when the parking lights are on. I picked up the relay and the switch at Radio Shack. Click here for the relay. Click here for the switch.

This is the diagram I used for wiring my lights. The relay is triggered by the parking lights, this turns on my aux lights, and the switch allows me to turn on/off the aux lights. I can only turn on the aux lights if my parking lights are on:

I found a great path for running wires through the firewall on my '02 XLT:

This is the view from the engine compartment. The access is behind the brake booster. Look behind the brake booster and down and you will see it.

This is the view from inside the Ex. Follow the brake pedal up to the firewall and look to the left. The red arrow points to the piece that you peel back and the black arrow points to the grommet:

I tapped the parking lights at the driver's side parking light itself for the relay, not a big deal since you have to route wires in that area anyway. The picture is from my how to for installing signal mirrors, the link is in my signature. There is some good info there for routing the wires.

Peel back and remove a portion of the plastic wrap - The red arrow indicates the quick splice connector connected to the Green w/White Stripe wire for the signal mirror - The white arrow indicates the quick splice connector connected to the Brown wire for my fog light relay.

Here is the pic of the grounding points. The red arrow indicates the grounding point for the lights, the white arrow indicates the grounding point for the relay & the switch, the yellow arrow indicates where I mounted the relay, the blue arrow points to the wire run from terminal 30 on the relay to the positive terminal on the battery (including in-line fuse):

FogLightWiringSmall.jpg

My relay wiring is as follows:

Term #30 - wire run through in-line fuse to positive terminal on battery
Term #85 - wire run to ground point indicated by white arrow
Term #87 - wire run and connected to positive wires on fog lights
Term #86 - wire run to switch located inside vehicle

The switch shown in the link has 3 terminals (ground is required to illuminate the LED indicator light):

Line - wire run to parking light circuit at driver's parking light
Load - wire from term #86 on relay
Ground - wire run to point indicated by white arrow
If you use a switch without an indicator light then the ground wire is not required.

When wired as above, the aux lights can only come on when the parking lights & the switch are on. When the parking lights are on you can shut off the aux lights with the switch.

Here's where I installed the switch:

Hope this helps out!! :biggthump

That is just for the cheap walmart lights I have mounted now. When I get the front all together, I'll just use that wiring for the factory fogs.

Still trying to figure out how to mount the bezels so I can remove them.

Here's the walmart lights:

Still trying to figure out how to mount the bezels so I can remove them.

the factory bezels on mine were held on by nuts (1/4" or so?) simply threaded over the three plastic studs per bezel. they actually held in there nice and weren't sloppy.

i called the ford dealership by my house and they said they dont have any foglight kits that you mentioned Kazer. where exactly did you get all of your parts from?

I had to go into the dealership and talk to the guy at the parts counter. He brought up and exploded diagram of the front end on an explorer and after about 15mins of searching he found the part number for the kit but they and all the other dealerships around me, so I went to tasca Ford parts . com and punched in the part number. I tried looking for the part number but couldn't find it. I went in originally looking for the part numbers for just the plastic bumper inserts but the kit was linked to the inserts

can anyone please help me find the kit that kazer is talking about. the kit that came with everything u need to to install them because ive looked and looked and looked and still no luck:( can someone please please help me i would greatly appreciate it!!!!!!!

I'll hit the Ford dealership tomorrow and report back
