1999 mountaineer v8 no spark

Help guys I have a 1999 v8 mountaineer 102,000 miles, ran fine previous day went to start it the next morning cranks no start. No codes, I hear the fuel pump. When it cranks it sometimes sounds like it's backfiring. I was thinking possible cam or crank sensor but have no codes, I don't want to shoot the parts cannon at it lol. Thanks in advance.

If it sounds like it's backfiring then it's getting spark somewhere. I'd do a fuel pressure test to start.
