Hi all.

I'm looking at a 2000 V8 explorer with 93k miles. The deal on the 2002 V6 fell thru, needed too much work. I need a safe reliable car that will last me for a while. Current owner claims bought new and driven by his retired parents for 60k, then by wife for 30k. Says well maintained, even 'babied'.

Can anyone tell me anything good or bad about this year and if the V8 is reliable?

Thank you!!!

Its a great truck, I have had mine for 5 years now and have almost 105k on it. Whats the price? In my opinion I think the 5.0 is the most reliable engine ever offered in the Explorer.

Great truck, great drive train. I bought mine @ 30k (miles) and it now has 80k, all trouble free miles. My father in law had a '97 w/ the same setup and put 225k+ on it before he sold it.

The only knock on it would be the bad gas mileage, esp. in the AWD config. I get between 14-17 mpg.

Run a carfax report on it. It will help confirm the mileage and tell you how many owners have had it.

I consider a 5.0 just broken in at 100K, so no worries there. I had 3 Mustang 5.0's all with over 120K that saw at least 5000 RPM every day that I drove them. One of Ford's best ever!! If the price is right, buy it and don't look back. I chose reliability over gas mileage (5.0 Vs. 4.0 SOHC). I consider the small amout of extra money I spend in gas a week an insurance policy toward internal (t-chain tensioner and balance cassettes) engine problems.

I have both, I would choose the V8 over the V6 every day. If the price is right, jump on it.

orig. asking $7600 but it is negotiable. I told him $7600 is way too high. It has 93k miles on it. I need the car to last for a while (not that I am big on driving mind you) and perhaps drive across country. I don't want to have to put a lot of money into it.

I did. It was originally bought by his retired parents in VA. They moved to CA and gave to his wife at around 63k. He says the car has been babied btwn the two and now selling due to divorce.

WHat is gas mileage like?

That's likely a good truck, but the price is too high. I paid $8500 for my 98 four years ago, with 98k on it. You can find a lot of similar model Explorers for $4000 or so, give or take depending on mileage. Do be sure to get a 98-01 model, they are virtually identical in features and reliability.

I agree the price seems high. Around here, average for the v8's is between 3000 and 5000.

yowza! thanks guys for saving me from way overpaying! As you can tell I am clueless about cars. But I think cars may be a bit higher in CA. But then again what do I know? I'm just a gal that needs a safe, reliable car. Obviously doing repairs myself is not an option so I want one that is not just going to be an endless money pit.

You know any good ones for sale where you are? I don't mind shipping or picking it up myself as long as it is before snow time. It has has been waaaaaaay too long since I have driven in snow, I think it would make me too nervous.

I know the local ford dealership here just let one go for 4900, but beyond that I haven't seen many. Most are the v6's.

There aren't any pictures, but I am sure you could email the guy for them. It sounds nice.

I don't know if that one has the v8 or not, its the Eddie Bauer, but I am not sure if those had the v8's.

Older, but does have v8

That one is high miles, but is cheap. Just throwing it out there.

That is a 2000 v8 one, looks in very nice condition. I personally think this one looks the best of the above.

The 98 Mountaineer that Jon just found is the deal that we all want. With a little work(few hundred dollars), the 160k truck will be great for $1150. Look around and be patient, find the colors, features, and condition that you need. Watch the interior and corrosion issues far more than mileage. Good luck,

WOW. Thanks! So you think this last one would be good? I'd have to drive or ship to Los Angeles. How many miles do you think I could put on this one? I want it to last with minimal amount of repairs. Remember I am a car dummy so I would have to take to dealer or someone for repairs.
How is the city gas mileage on these V8s?

Thanks everyone for all your help!!

I generally get 15-16 mpg in the city, upwards of 18-20 on the highway depending on how fast I drive.

Plan for a lot for shipping also if you get if from too far away. Fuel is so expensive now that you can't as feasibly go pick something up. The shipping industry is booming now, the costs have gone up.

Yes you are correct sir! I looked on ebay. then for the heck of it got some quotes from GA and FL ------->LA. range wildly from 800-1000. So that is about my savings vs buying the car here re: registration. The cars out of state are still cheaper.

Now here is question for all you explorer fans, my 2007 consumer car reports lists 2000 year as worse than average. They don't have much good to say about explorer or even escape. As a matter of fact they said they couldn't recommend escape b/c of govt tip-up. Whatever the heck that means.
So how come you are all raving about yours?
