2003 Ford Explorer
I have a 2003 Ford Explorer that has a 4.0L engine that is no good. I have an opportunity to buy a 2004 engine. My understanding is that only 1999 - 2003 engines will interchange.

Is this information correct? if not, can anyone shed light on this?

Thanks,

Matthew

I thought 2005 was when they changed the 4.0?

According to Car-part.com's search engine. 01-03 are your interchangeable years.

Looking into it a bit more... It looks like you can span out a bit further. As long as the 8th digit in the VIN is an "E", the engine should be the same.

There are a couple generations on SOHC engines.....
97-01
02-04
early 05
late 05-06
07-10

In 05 is when the timing chains and balancer changed to the better/revised design. From what I can tell the long block has not changed at all from 97-10, just the few updates. I have an 04 explorer and am using a 07 Ranger SOHC in it. I took everything off the ranger engine and put all the explorer stuff on. From what I noticed the Timing cover, oil pan, water pump, passenger exhaust manifold and the few sensors on the block are all the same. I used the 07 ranger balancer with no issues also.
