5.0 Sport Trac Lives

I have converted a few job 1 sport tracs to 5.0 it is pretty straight forward

Yes the awd will go right in

The wiring is easy enough 98-02 is all very similar, you do not need to swap the entire truck side wiring harness when it is really pretty simple to just wire the 5.0 drivetrain harness to the truck

Then there's the rear window. My plan is to rig up a bypass circuit with relays so the switch directly operates it, like it should be instead of whomever's stupid idea it was to have it electronic controlled.

Is this because of the V8 swap, or something else?

- Good.

- Yea!!!

- This is a 2000 Explorer EB 5.0L/4R70W/AWD to a 2005 Sport Trac.
Is the 2001 recommendation based only on wiring? Or are there other factors?

2005 sport trac well that is a whole different ball game
You will run into some Major issues this is not an easy swap

I just completed an 05
Had to wire in a 2002 instrument cluster
Had to bypass 3 circuits in that instrument cluster
Has to bypass fuel pump driver module
Had to swap fuel tank level sender in tank to work with 02 cluster
Had to add quite a few wires and move around quite a few more

The 05 trac is can bus the instrument cluster is a single year thing and it took the place of the now Mia gem module.

This takes ALOT of specialty work to make this conversion happen. In this case you would Likely want to swap in the entire truck side harness from the 5.0 explorer and then You may have to sort out the back window controls. I did not do this, instead I wired the truck around the 5.0 drivetrain.

Things can get a little complicated trying to wire a 4 door v8 explorer into a 05 trac body, the restraints computer, and other hardware is way different than an old 4 door gen ii.
I have recently completed several sport trac and late model ranger 5.0 swaps so I approached this one the same way, adapt the truck to accept the v8 pcm

Any way you slice it the Dakota digital is required for speedometer to work and you will never be able to use the 05
Cluster. The 05 cluster and the old sohc pcm talked to each other over the can bus network, with the v6 pcm Mia you will never have a tach, a speedo, an odometer and more

However on all the sport tracs I have converted to v8 (01, 02, 03 and 05) I have never had any issues with ttb e rear power window.. it works just like stock no wiring or changes were needed

We have a 2005 trac here fully function with a 5.0 4r70w and 4406m t case
Uses 02 instrument cluster
Uses 02 fuel level sender in the tank
Uses custom fuel line adapter an6 fittings
Uses lots of custom wiring to make the truck work without the v6 pcm or cluster
Uses Dakota digital to drive the vss signal to speedometer, speed control, wipers, and more
This was one of the mort tricky 5.0
Conversions I have done

05
Cluster go bye bye,
It’s neat but I can’t use it because the v6 pcm is gone
To eBay with the old cluster

Now the cluster wiring for 05 back to 01 v8

This is what it looks like

An the fuel gauge will peg full because the 05 uses a feedback level sender in the tank, drop tank swap in 98-04 sender and ground wire

You still have to address several of the wires that were not used and still remain in truck. Basically I grounded 3 relay control wires then wire the relays backwards so they switch on w ignition power

Fun times!!

Can’t see it anymore because it’s not there.. fuel pump driver module bypassed (wiring)

End result one badass rig!

That's a lot to digest.
Quite the kick in the junk.
But I'm down.

2 phases:
- Full powertrain swap w/ AWD and electronics.
- BW4406M upgrade to 4x4

Other than the ripout, what is the downside to the V8 harness swap?
If you had to do it over, which route are you taking, and why?

I really appreciate the input!
Thanks!

P.S. If I'm doing a harness swap, I'll do the digital HVAC/Info Center too - I just didn't want to have to paint all the interior panels.

I think you'd be best off to find a 2001 Explorer or Mountaineer then completely gut the Sport Trac to transfer *everything* electronic, including the wiring. Splice in extensions to the rear for the tail lights.

What happened in '01 that would make me want to give up the '00 Eddie Bauer donor vehicle?

Nothing 2000 and 2001 5.0’just about identical

You are welcome

I would do it my way again
Anything that has the 42 pin square connector under the hood can accept the 5.0 drivetrain with some wiring on the truck side

The wiring may look intimidating but I have done it so I can literally show you how and why
It took 2-3 days of wiring and sorting things out not weeks or anything

Last time I tried to wire the entire truck side of things to a different year it turned into a mess! Weeks of wiring on that one
