I bought a rear end at the Junk Yard this weekend and was trying to decode the axle tag (it didn't match up to whats on the rangerstation.com) and was hoping you guys could help out. Its an 8.8 w/4:10's is all I can tell from the tag and the ring gear. I pulled the axles and they are 31 spline. The tag says:

S615B R
4L10 88 5L13

it looks like a 4.10 in an 8.8... if you look into it, you can tell its got an abs ring....

Can you tell me about the square cut out on the carrier ? ...I've only seen them w/out this cut out.

Thanks for the help

Nearly complete tag decoding:

S615B=axle model number. occasionally important when buying parts. Not sure about the "R", but it might be part of the model number or might be something else.

4L10=4.10 gear ratio. The "L" indicates a Ford Traction-Lock limited slip carrier. The square notches to either side of the main opening are for the tabs on the LS clutches. These cutouts are part of what makes the LS carrier a little weaker than the open carrier.

5L13=production sequence number.
