91 navajo wheel bearing lock nut keeps breaking

Wheel bearing lock nut/spindle nut keeps breaking when I try to remove it. I tried to get one at a junk yard but I broke two trying to get them off. The assembly costs $112 at local dealership. Making a simple brake job real expensive. tips on removal and cheap alternetives would be greatly appreciated.

Manual or auto hubs?
If auto hubs, did you remove the little "keyway" that holds the locknut in place?

Ouch....

Magnet, spray lube, little O ring pick, hammer, those things can be a PITA to get out, especially on a junk yard truck, but if youdo it right normally some spray lube and a good magnet can drag it out of there..
