I currently have a 94 XLT 4-Door 4X4 w/ 135,000 (automatic trans.). Starting this past summer, my Explorer didn't not want to shift into overdrive. The usual shift comes @ around 50-55 mph and a noticable decline in RPMs occurs. Oh, the check engine light comes on after continuous acceleration past that point, for example, while I am trying to pass a car or going over a steep hill on the highway. I finally got a chance to take it to a local mechanic, and he changed the trans. fluid and filter. He also replaced the 3rd and 4th soleonoids (sp?). When I drove it home, after getting it fixed, it still would not shift into overdrive. I unhooked the battery from the Explorer in order try to let the computer reset. This worked for the about 3 days. No problems at all, and I thought it was fixed. However, the other day, the Explorer didn't shift again, and all the old problems have come back. I love this truck, and this is about the only problem I have had with it. Could anyone enlighten me to what this problem could be? Thank you.

I'm not a mechanic, but I would say it has something to do with your computer. I would call a transmission speciallist and tell them whats going on. With the amount of ex's on the road, I'm sure you are not the only one with this problem. A good tranny specialist should know the fix.

it sounds like one of the auto clutches is torn up. this happened on my mustang and it required a rebuild, instead i had the trans fluid changed and it acted normal for a bit, long enough to trade it on my ex. i woudl only take it to someone you trust or the dealer as most will try to get you if they realize that you dont know everything (i speak from experience.)

good luck and welcom to the greatest ex website online.

Thank you all for your help.

OD Woes

Not sure if this is any use to you or not, but on my wifes Pontiac Bonneville we had the same problem, no OD and the chech engine light was on. Another charcteristic of the problem was the cruise didn't work. We checked the codes and found that it was a bad Throttle postion sensor. Put a new one on and voila fixed her right up. It sure sounds like its something in the comp or sensors if you reset the comp and if fixed the prob for awhile. Leads me to believe that it not anything internal in the tranny itself. Get the code read, and good luck!

CHECK YOUR ALTERNATOR. ON THE X THE OD IS ELECTRONIC. WHEN MINE WOULDNT SHIFT INTO OD IT WAS CAUSE MY ALTERNATOR WAS SHOT. I FIXED IT AND MY OD WORKED FINE

ALSO THERE IS A WIRING HARNESS ON THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT THAT CAN COME LOOSE OR FALL OUT. THAT CAN ALSO CAUSE LOSS OF OD. AND JUST SO U KNOW THE REASON THE ALTERNATOR CAN CAUSE LOSS OF OD IS BECAUSE THE ALTERNATOR HAS A BUILT IN VOLTAGE REGULATOR. REPLACE ONE AND U REPLACE BOTH.
