'94 with Automatic starts in 2nd gear

Hi! Our 1994 Explorer has a problem. After it has been driven some time, the transmission starts in 2nd gear when starting from a stop. If I move the shift lever all the way into "1," it will shift into first. Is this symptomatic of a major transmission problem, or could it be something relatively simple, like a bad sensor or misadjusted linkage? Anyone have any experience with this?

...if i am understanding you correct, you may need a park/neutral switch as yours maybe broken and the broken piece thinks it's in neutral when at second position....i hope this makes since as it happened to me a long time ago....

Welcome to this forum! It could be a sticking governor, intermediate band adjustment, bad modulator, or a valve body problem.
