98 explorer only engages in low range

My explorer only engages in low range. When I try to engage high range I can hear the shift motor operate and when it trys to engage it makes a grinding sound. Works fine in low range. And yes the vehicle is in neutral when I try shift. Any ideas?

I would guess your transfer case is fried, the hi gears are worn down or off, have to pull out the transfer case to investigate more, find a local salvage yard
