So my Dad decided he was going to paint his 96 XL. The rocker panels and around the gas cap were in bad shape and he has a plow on it so he would like to get another year or two out of her. He is in Canada where they use alot of salt on the roads and it works out that Im in Florida - land of the rust free sheetmetal.

So on his last visit in May, we visited the junk yard looking for parts for my Buick. He had the idea to cut the quarter of an explorer to replace around his gas cap area. We had a hacksaw and a hammer and chisel, but we got it off nicely and he took it home in his luggage.

He started work on that area, both sides were really rusted.

Next on the list was the rocker panels. A couple months ago he saw a bubble by the plastic cover on the rocker panel and poked at it with his key.
Well the key sailed on through the rocker panel.
And when He pryed down on it he nearly died.
Popped them off and this is what he saw.

So, he made me the offer, that he would buy me a cordless reciprocating saw, if I would go cut the rockers off an explorer here in FL and mail them home.
I did just that.
Heres a couple of shots of the donar after one side was cut

I mailed them home, and Dad drilled out the spot welds and took them apart for what he needed.

A few hours later, they are on, welded, and epoxy primered.

AAAMM-azing. Awesome work !!!

Damb that looks sharp! I wish I had that kinda skill so I could get my '93 lookin' that good. He sure did one hell of a job.

Thanks guys, I will pass along the compliments for sure.

The color makes it a different vehicle... its not even base clear, its spray on color. I forget the name of the paint... Sintari I think.

That looks really good!
Where is that junk yard you got those parts from?
Thanks much.

Here in Orlando
LKQ near the corner of 417 and highway 50

The rocker panels - they charged me $15 each
The quarter panel - they charged me $10.
So it was well worth the $100 shipping to Canada for Dad.

Wow thats really cheap, I might have to check that out im not too far away.

Ask your Father to sign up as a member here. I'm sure that he could help people out in the body work & detailing section of this forum. What is his main profession?

LOL, he is not that computer savvy....Im lucky I got pictures from him!

This is probably only the 2nd or 3rd complete car he has painted. Growing up, I remember the first being a 1980 T-bird, the second being his first explorer - a 91. I also remember a 84 S15 Jimmy, that was just touch up body work and paint but he might as well painted the whole thing.

He is basically a jack of all trades.. they have a saying at home "he can put an ass in a cat". Everyone comes to him when they need something done.

His profession is residential and commercial draperies and blinds. He is just as good on a sewing machine! He has also done some automotive upholstery, he even had a part in a set of new seats ready for his 66 Olds Delta 88 (that's been a 14 yr project so far, but ready for paint soon hopefully)

LKQ is a great place
Its U-pull so bring your tools

All the vehicles are up on stands so you can get just about any part you want.
Always a few explorers and mountaineers there.

Prices are great too.

Just a couple yrs ago Mom had a 94 New Yorker, and part of the exhaust got a hole in it. The dealer wanted $1200 for this resonator thingy... I went to LKQ, and got the whole exhaust from converter to chrome tip for $15. Cut it in 3 pieces, mailed it home for $75 and dad welded it on.

Looks great

Nice color change

Awesome job!

The new color looks much better.

Wonderful skills. I wish I could do body work.

Those pictures make me so thankful I live in Arizona. I saw a car with just a bit of rust on it this week. I about died. Until I saw the tag and saw it was from Wisconsin.

That is some wonderful things to say about your dad. I'm sure he feels the same way about you. Funny how that works out...

Amazing work...Luckily I've never seen rust like that but I'm impressed!!!

Very good job.
Tell dad I have no rust-but he can come hang out in my garage anytime. If he gets bored I have a paint gun and a truck--:D

wow it looks hella bad ass now and it looks like it is brand new
