A/c Switching on and off???

So I am curious as to when the a/c pops on. Does it work only when you have the dial turned to the "max A/C or A/C" or does it come on when the blue/red heat control dial is turned to the blue side? I always thought it only kicked on when you turned on the a/c. Mine has been "popping" on and off lately even when the a/c is off. The clutch seems to engage. I unplugged the connector just in case. I want to save as much gas as possible with theses gas prices.

theres only 2 settings on the explorer that has it off. One is the vent only symbol, and off. lol

As to the location, off is in the center, and the vent only is the first one to the left.

Thes rest on the right side is A/C and Max A/C which does turn on the A/C system. The entire left side consists of defrost and what not, which they all turn on the A/C in order to dry out the air.

So plug it back in and stick it on vent or off if you want it to stay off
