Another Tranny issue?

2005 explorer 4.0, bought from friend whom is not mechanical at all. only 54,000 k, recently had HEADS replaced. Mechanic told me the heads were really bad shape, he used the word "bent" ??? Anyway happy with the truck for 1 week only. drove approx. 200 miles, next day would barely go into reverse.After troubleshooting found trans. line connected to radiator had been leaking fluid. Probably ALL of it. Band or bands seem to be broken and wont shift out of 2nd and no reverse.
This is all to common with Explorers with other threads I have read here.
Question is, is the tranny rebuildable after running so hot and low of fluid ??
Can the bands be replaced without a total rebuild?

Not to be a downer but my trans wouldn't shift out of 2nd and no reverse (unless bringing up rpm's then hard engagement).

It's at the shop right now with the transmission being rebuilt.

No worries, I will be off to repair as well. I am looking for a Shop that will also do the necessary upgrades to prevent the "EXPLODER" from dying as quick this time.
