bearings and seals and spindle

What actually holds the front spindles in place on Explorers with automatic hubs? Is it the inner and outer bearings and seals with the spindle nut? Or is there something else? I can move my spindle around with the hub off and need to know if I need to replace the bearings or can I just tighten the nut? Thanks.

Upper & lower ball joints hold the spindle in place.

When you say "I can move my spindle around with the hub off..." do you mean vertically or horizontally?
