Got a 2001 Explorer with the 4.0L OHC. When it's really cold outside, the truck will not idle till it warms up. It will start but dies when the RPM's go down. It also sounds like it may be missing. Once the engine starts to warm up, it idles fine. It drives fine. I also noticed that once in a while the motor will hesitate for a split second when in cruising steep, like it hiccups.
Any ideas what it could be? The plugs are maybe a year old or so, the fuel filter was changed along with the fuel pump about 3 years ago.

Vacuum leak almost certainly.
