If I'm understanding correctly, any lift above 3" requires extended radius arms or brackets. If this is correct, what are the advantages and disadvantages of the extended radius arms and the radius arm brackets?

The brackets lower the point where the arm mounts (similar to the I-beam drop brackets) there is no gain in suspension travel or flex. Extended arms allow the use of shorter (closer to the frame) mounting brackets because they are built to compensate for the added distance created by the lift. They also help provide better suspension travel and flex.
