My 2005 Ford Explorer's 4.0 v6 engine took the rear timing chain. Weighing my options here and was wondering what engines are interchangeable? Have gone through older threads, but can't seem to find a straight answer.

In your case I would get a low mile motor from a 05+ explorer, mustang or ranger. The long block will interchange.

Any 4.0l SOHC long block will technically work. The later ones (02+) have better timing cassettes.

Found a 2004 from an Explorer with 58,000 miles, the swap came out perfect.
