explorer sport, lost reverse then acted like engine seized?

my 97 Explorer Sport at first the linkage seems sloppy it was hard to find reverse then would have to rev up a little to get into reverse yesterday lost reverse completely shut vehicle down and when I went to start it again acted like the engine was seized door locks keep clicking up and down engine would hardly turn over started spotting a little bit and then clunk now turn the key everything completely dead is this a sensor has anybody had a similar problem please help this is the only vehicle I have small children need to get to school

Can you look under the rig and look at the transmission and notice if there is a leak around the bottom Where the valves are? Have you checked the trans fluid level?
