Seemingly abruptly, the factory sub in 96 Limited sounds like its blown. It makes popping noises unless the bass is turned way down, or the volume is way down. How do I access the sub and take it out to see if its any good?

The rest of the audio system seems fine.

Thanks

YOu will have to take off the cover over the sub. Its pretty common that they blow after a few years if you listen to a lot of loud music. Its a pretty cheap speaker and you should be able to find a repalcement in the aftermarket. Depending on the year explorer it could be a 6.5in or a 8in sub. Either way if you're just trying a cheap fix get an OEM. If you want it fixed right get a better sub in a sealed box and a small amp.

If its popping, then the sub is blown. You can either get a factory replacement as stated, or mod the factory sub box as some have done to fit an 8" sub in there
