Replacing the gaskets is a great idea, while you have it apart you might consider replacing the rocker arms, pushrods, and lifters, which tend to wear out and clatter once these engines reach higher mileage.

There's no need to remove the water pump, since it's attached to the block and won't interfere with the heads or almost anything else. The factory units tend to last a long time, but while you have it out, you should consider replacing the thermostat and possibly the water pump as well, mostly since it's easier to do this stuff while you have the thing apart anyway rather than taking it halfway apart each time something comes up.

no the water pump can stay but alt,ac and power steering all got to go,you sure its the head gasket, those heads crack very easy and if you are going to reuse them make sure to have them magafluxed.i would ditch them and throw some 95tm heads on there, better head and more power only problem is it takes you to 10:1 so you have to run 90+ gas.

edit yea what he said beat me too it.:D:D ive got links to all the cheapest places if you want them.

I, for one, am interested... where can those heads be bought?

Someone also mentioned a rebuilt head exchange on this site, but I couldnt find it... Anyone?

ill post all the links tomorrow im out of town now but all the links and everything I did is in a thread called 95tm heads

not trying to hijack the tread but some of the links are stuff you might and should do wile you got those heads off.here are the links, what are you trying to do?are you wanting to do a performance upper rebuild or just like a quick head swap.if you got the whole thing apart you might as well do it all, water pump, cam, probably get away with your stock lifters,95tm heads, pushrods, rockerarm shaft, and dual springs, you can use your stock valves and headers.you would have an new upper and way more powerful.the bottom end on these motors last forever.

You should get a factory manual for your explorer for doing stuff like engine removal. To be honest Chilton and Haynes suck. I've tossed out more of them than I can count because they pissed me off.

so I tore it all apart piece by piece this last week and i got down to the heads and cylinder area there is a **** ton of rust build up that was causeing the gasket to become plug up i guess since 92 when the owner bought the truck, anyway he ran water the whole time instead of coolant so its pretty bad is there anything i should know or do as far as removal or is there anythig i can do as far as the inside of the case goes. um everything else is in pretty good order considering the matinence neglect of this truck but what can you ask for for 600 dollars huh?

You could run a couple runs of that radiator flush stuff. I'd do that before scrapping a engine.

well im not gonna scrap the engine i just wanted to know if i could clean all that rust out of there easily or what i even had to do if anything to do it thanks for a reply though, and could i use the flush stuff with everything off the enginie? im down to the case.

If you have the rusted parts off the engine you could probably take them to a engine/head rebuild shop and see if they have some chemical cleaners for them?
