Help Just Killed My 02 Sport Trac

Hi there, what a bad day I just had...

I am new to my sport trac and love it, had it for 2 months and killed it..
This was my first truck..
Here what happened..

Was on a bush road, and road was washed out, I drove into and front dropped into water to about bumper or slightly higher..I tried to get out but could not...

(Just had trucked Krowned, and remote started)

I was told to keep engine running(friend thought I was stuck backend in)...I did as it was dying I gave it gas to run..
it did for a little then died with a sucking sound....

I tried to restart 2x in water (DOH!!!! I know now)
Tried to restart 1 or 2 x on dry land

Water leaking in to me feet, NEW remote starter fob falls in water

Had friends tow me out and back to garage..

Drained oil, removed plugs cranked 10x to remove water..
Noticed water poor out when I removed #3 plug...

Put new plugs and oil in and got started
Lots of white smoke, and water coming out tailpipe..
Now have engine KNOCK and glug glug sound....
It sounds a bit like a tractor or a deisel now...

I had someone look at it and they think might be lifters, but not sure...

Learned a new phrase.."hydrolock" and also future note "why NOT to shampoo engine from inside"

• Should I Repair/Rebuild my engine or Replace engine with rebuilt or used?
• I have a 4L v6 SOHC, what years engine can I use?
• Can I use engine from Explorer (Not sport trac) or ranger?
• What is this going to cost me?

Basically I would like to know what engines I can use and from what years...
Same size engine 4L v6 4x4

Has anyone used a 04 or 03 engine in an 02 SOHC or do I need an 02?
Does it matter if Flex Fuel or not? Mine currently is not but I see a 04 flex close to me...

biggest difference between flex and regular is minimal a tune sometimes larger injectors on the flex. best to do is stick to same year or close to it with same features

Update

Well, I ended up replacing the engine with an 2003 4.0 w 54000KMs on it..
Runs much better and doesn't sound like a tractor...

Where did the engine come from, who did the transfer and what was your cost? May help someone in the future (i pray not me)

Any 2002 to 2011 4.0 will work in an engine swap. All of them have a balance shaft, and yes the flex fuelies have a larger injector. If you don't use E85, then it won't matter what year the engine was built. I am not putting it in mine!
