I have a 1996 AWD Ford Explorer. I don't understand why my tires are turned in toward the top and turned out (/ \) at the bottom. I have just changed the lower ball joints and thought that would take care of the problem, but it didn't. Any help would be appreciated.

You need an alignment. If the truck had an alignment in the recent past (while the bad ball joints were on), then putting new ball joints on would screw up the alignment. It's important to get an alignment after any front end work involving the upper/lower ball joints or tie rod ends. It's possible to get it "close" by hand (there are a few threads around here on that), but it's very hard to get it exactly right.

How are the upper ball joints? It's possible that they are shot as well (they usually go before the lowers).

thanks for the info. I'm going to change the upper joints and see if it will fix it. get alignment to. love this sight.
