Give me a few weeks and I'll let you know how my lowering goes. I put new shocks in the front and cut 3/4's off the coil spring and it lowered it a hair, but the way the new shocks are designed, it actually defeated what I was trying to do. I am going to take a little more off and then I need to get the rears installed and do the same.
Keep in mind that the springs will settle with a bit of driving. It might be a good idea to let that happen before cutting any more off.
They are the originals, so I doubt they will settle much more, if at all.
Ah, I did not catch that. Please be aware that the factory springs are known for breaking. It would be a good idea to replace them and not modify them, as that makes it even more likely they will break.
I am aware and have seen an Explorer or two around here limping to one side because of that issue. I've got 153,000 miles on mine and no issues yet(knock on wood).
I'm considering this a test more than anything because no one(that I know of) has tried this and it's a cheap mod for those that want to lower their Explorer/Mountaineer/Aviators. The idea comes from the Mustang crowd because they have a straight rate springs and can lower their cars without affecting ride quality.
