As a former Ford Tech and dealership parts guy I was fairly confident that I could take a nice 1997 Explorer 4.0 OHC with a smoked tranny and dead air and use a 2000 model slightly wrecked and rusty 2000 model and have cheapo 4x4 .
Great theory . Visually very similar , but drive train is not exactly the same. There
are slight difference in the trans that I think can be over came with clever electrics I used the Y2K trans ( 5 speed auto ) t-case and wiring harness . The 1997 has a speed sensor at both ends of the housing , the Y2k has a rear sensor only . I hope this just throws a code . The truck sat for 4 years , I pulled the tank to look and found a rust bomb fuel pump and heavily stained , lined tank . Any suggestions on cleaning the tank would be greatfully appreciated .
