Well, I didn't find anything in a search, and I haven't seen anything ever posted on this, so I thought I'd post it in case it helps anyone else.

Even though I didn't figure it all out until a few days ago, my parking brake cable wasn't fully releasing. I discovered earlier the drivers side cable had fully seized in the housing, but even with two new cables (left and right) it was still not fully letting go. Why? There is a spring on the left side where the cables meet. This spring was worn and wasn't keeping enough tension on the cable to pull it all the way back to keep the brake released. The solution was a $2.00 spring from Ace hardware to replace the original. It feels like I have my old X back, power, mileage, you name it.

91-94 owners with bad mileage, rear brake woes, etc. I advise checking your parking brake cables and make sure the lever inside the drum is releasing, and replace your tension spring when you get new brake shoes.
