The parking brake on my 2006 Explorer XLT compresses when I step on it, but it won't stay locked into position.

The cable and spring look fine from inspection, but I'm missing something. Any idea what happened? I have never fixed parking brakes on a rear disc brake vehicle so I'm in the dark as to where to start.

Thanks!

I'm going to bump this because we have the exact same issue. I suspect there is something wrong in the pedal mechanism, perhaps related to the release cable.

So, anyone out there with the same issue? Were you able to repair it? Did you have to replace the parking brake release pedal?

When I got home I looked at it. There must be a spring on the release cable that broke or fell off. If I push the release handle in the parking brake will hold. If it's an easy fix, I'll fix it one day. Otherwise, we'll just remember to push the handle in before setting the parking brake.
