i have my heads off, and the tops off my pistons are really nasty. what would be the safest way to clean them?

Cleaning the pistons is not necessarily a good idea, unless you spend a lot of time doing it to achievea perfectly clean surface. The reason for this is because if the carbon deposits are not fully removed but somewhat loosened from the piston, it makes it easy for it to float inside the cylinder and cause wear/damage to the cylinder wall. I suggest removing only the loose material on the piston and leaving the rest. In actuallity, it is doing no harm.
also, i learned that sometimes with varnish, that that is what happens when parts seat... i once took apart my RC engine, cleaned it up nice, when i put it back together it never ran properly..... someone told me that the varnish that built up was needed for proper compression and stuff....
