rear diff help

yea theres slack in my rear diff, can someone point me in the right direction for a rebuild kit? its a 2002 xls with 3.55s 4x4auto

how are you checking your back lash?
 






Yeah what kind of "slack" are you talking about?

Rotational "slack", as wickedturns mentioned when he mentioned "backlash", is normal but lateral (up/down or side/side) is not
 






Well guys, SOME backlash (rotational freeplay) is normal. But if he's getting too much, well, it's time to pop the cover off and take a look. And if he's getting fore/aft or up and down movement on the pinion, time to order a new set of gears.
 






im checking it by putting the explorer in neutral and setting the ebrake.

im getting about 3/8ths to about half inch rotational slack.

i have yet to check the lateral or vertical slack.
 






not axactlly an accurate way of checking. propper back lash, pull the rear cover and put a dial indicator on it. look .06 to .10 in back lash.
